They are not feeling secure about the medium on which they are using the pictures. Some may be using different names on different mediums so they dont want to use original picture. Some may be interested to spread lies, confusion etc.
Some people use fake pictures to hide their identity. But everyone not use fake photo. So we must use real photos and being honest because beauty is within.
There are 3 possible reasons for hiding behind a fake photo: 1) insecurity of a newcomer, 2) attempt of cheating, 3) sometimes people just don`t want to advertise their face, they want you to pay attention to something else.
Someone who is fake, has a fake product, fake story and a fake identity. Can not be trusted. He is a cheat and wants to cheat. He has to use a fake picture to achieve not been traced and identified

The way I look at it, people often lead with their "program" instead of themselves.
Programs come and go. You have a life expectancy of at least 75 years.
So if the program product or service will "Help Others" achieve their goals you have no reason not to use your own

These fools don't understand that. They don't realize that 90% of their business failing is the fact they do not have a trustworthy image.
If you are in business, you cannot hide from your clients. If you're only interested in the Internet as a hobby, then using avatars is what you use. Real business people do business with real people, face to face with full names used. Just because this is the web does not mean this is still the proper way to do Business. I won't do business with people who hide. Don't know what they're hiding.
I agree with Jaris, some people just don't have a face for a camera, like the saying that many DJ's have face perfect for radio... lol! I also don't think one should condemn everyone who uses a fake picture as having a sinister motive and having stuff to hide.Oh, and yes, my picture is actually one of me...!
Disguise is an inherited quality of a Human being.There could be many reasons for using fake profile picture:
1.To keep privacy
2.To use image for promotional purposes
3.Pranks (could be )
4.Cheat ,but if people cheat well most of them do leave behind errors ,I agree with you.
5.Post picture of people whom they like or pics of super stars.

Why do people use pictures other than one of themselves? I would think that because things have gotten so bad here in the world, one would choose to protect themselves from the evil that is out there. People's identity is being stolen left and right and I personally feel that putting one's true pic out would allow room for exploitation.
Some people use fake pictures because they think that the picture will not get them the type of results they are looking for. For others it may be a case that the information they are providing is not true and to brand a face with that information would condemn them. I think you should use your picture and stand behind the information you are providing.
