The 'QuickBooks Desktop doesn't start' issue can hinder your crucial operations and prevent your payroll from running. Users either lose all responses or become stuck on the loading screen. Due to this problem, the error message 'QuickBooks Desktop does not start' frequently displays. This blog will help you find out the causes and guide you in fixing the issue.

It's essential to remember that clicking the QuickBooks Desktop icon may occasionally prevent it from loading. Let the program have ample time to load. Furthermore, if you receive a message stating that QuickBooks requires a subscription, it's understandable that you're using an outdated version of the program or that your subscription has expired. Let’s go through this blog to know more.

Possible Factors Leading to QuickBooks Won’t Start Issue

The two factors responsible for the QB won’t start issue are listed here.
  1. Damaged installation is one reason QuickBooks won't start. An incomplete or faulty installation can result in errors that prevent the software from opening, rendering it unresponsive or stuck on the loading screen.
  2. Another reason QuickBooks won't open is a corrupted or missing QBWUSER.INI file. The sudden crash also depends on whether this configuration file functions correctly, and any problems can make the program unresponsive or not launch.

Follow These Fixes When QuickBooks is Unable to Start

If you are unable to start QuickBooks Desktop, try these two solutions.

Solution 1: Determine If the Issue is With Your File or the Program

The problem might be due to damage to your company file. Follow these steps to identify whether the issue lies with QuickBooks or your data file.

Step 1: Open Your File with All Windows Closed

  1. Launch the desktop version of QuickBooks.
  2. Choose your company file from the 'No Company Open' window.
  3. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard, then choose Open
  4. Holding down the ALT key until the file opens is advised.
  5. Release the ALT key, type your password if asked to log in, then press and hold ALT once more to choose OK.

Step 2: Suppress the QuickBooks Application

  1. Once the Ctrl key has been depressed, double-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon. Important: If QuickBooks freezes or displays an error, hold the Ctrl key until you see the 'No Company Open' popup.

  2. After selecting your company file, click Open.

Solution 2: Renaming the QBWUSER.ini File

Changing the name of the QBWUSER.ini file by using the right number of characters will help you fix the issue.

  1. Open the folder containing the QBWUSER.ini file.
  2. Turn on hidden files and folders if you are unable to find them.
  3. Once the folder has been found, right-click on the 'QBWUSER.ini' file and choose 'Rename.'
  4. To the file name (e.g., 'QBWUSER.ini.old'), append '.old.'
  5. Rename the 'ecml' file after that.
  6. Rename these files, then try to launch QuickBooks once more. If it functions, the problem is fixed.
Hopefully, if QuickBooks Desktop doesn’t start, you can thoroughly review these steps. The above steps will help you fix the issue and return to your accounting work.
