Mahindra XUV500 Hybrid – The Green Car

A hybrid car uses two or more sources of energy. Most of the vehicles use engines running on petroleum fuels. The petroleum resources are fast depleting. Also the vehicles running on fuels are causing pollution. Various automobile research organisations are conducting research for the reduction of the consumption of the petroleum fuels. By using the EMF of an electric motor in conjunction with the petrol or diesel engines the fuel consumption and air pollution can be reduced considerably.

The Mahindra and Mahindra is the first Indian automobile company engaged in manufacturing green vehicles. During 2012 auto expo they have showcased the cars e2o and the electric Verito. The electric car e2o is already on roads. During the 2014 Indian expo they have unveiled the hybrid variant of the SUV XUV500. The body has been in acrylic to show the working of the hybrid system and the auto manual transmission. The production procedures are on and the The XUV500 Hybrid is expected to be launched towards the end of 2015.

The Mahindra XUV500 Hybrid will be the first diesel-electric hybrid car in the world when launched. It uses diesel fuel combined with the electric power of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM).The diesel engine of the standard XUV500 will be used for the Hybrid also.

The 2.2 litre engine has a power of 140 bhp and a torque of 330 NM. The capacity of the motor is not yet decided. The battery used will be Lithium-ion battery. The regenerative braking technique employed will help the charging of the batteries while braking. The fuel efficiency of the SUV is expected to be improved by 18%. Auto transmission variants are also expected for the Hybrid XUV500. Either the AMT system from the Mahindra Quanto or the 6 speed AT system from the SUV Ssang Yong Tivoli will be used. The exterior of the hybrid car is expected to be similar to that of the standard car except for some modifications under the belly to place the motor and the charger. The hybrid model is expected to weigh more than the standard car because of the weight of the motor and the battery.

The cabin of the XUV500 Hybrid will remain the same as far as features are concerned. An automatic AC, leather seats, electric ORVMs, rear parking assist, GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are expected in the top variants. There will be changes in the control panels to place extra electrical instruments. The suspension and the brake systems will remain the same.

The first diesel hybrid XUV500 is expected to be priced Rupees 15 to 16 laky. The car is expected to be popular because of its fuel efficiency, green technology and low emissions.
