Mahindra Scorpio New Expert Review by Autoportal
The Mahindra Scorpio is the most popular SUV in the Indian automobile market. Nearly 4500 units of the Scorpio are sold every month. The Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (M&M) has originally launched the Scorpio in 2002 and has been refreshed many times. After the latest facelift the new models have been launched in September 2014.
The Scorpio is the best off-roading vehicle in India with a passenger capacity of 7 to 9. The Mahindra Scorpio comes in 9 diesel variants priced Rupees 8.71 to 13.48 lakh. There are 2 all wheel drive variants. All the variants have manual transmission. The Scorpio comes in colours of regal blue, fiery black, molten red, mist silver and diamond white.
Externally the body features of the Scorpio have remained the same throughout its life. But for the new model visible changes are there on the body built on the hydro formed ladder frame. Instead of the conventional head lamps rectangular projector type lamps are provided now for the top variants with daytime running LED lamps, silver skid plates on the bumper and body coloured door handles. New design 17” wheels and tail lamp cluster with LED lamps are the other changes on the body.
The new Scorpio has a cabin similar to that of the XUV500. The basic features of the cabin include an engine immobiliser, child lock facility, a manual AC, fabric seats, tilt and power steering and externally operated body coloured ORVMs. The top variants have 2 air bags, ABS, EBD, remote central locking, automatic AC, cruise control, power windows, rear wiper/defogger, rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, electric ORVMs and a music system with touch screen controls, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and telephony. The Scorpio S2 variant is powered by a 2523 cc, 75 bhp and 200 Nm torque engine mated to a 5 speed manual gear box. The other variants have 2179 cc, 120 bhp and 290 NM torque engines. The Scorpio gives mileages of 15.4 kmpl. The car takes 16.2 seconds for 0 to 100 kmph acceleration and has top speed of 152 kmph.
The dimensions of the Scorpio S2 variant is 4465 mm length, 1820 mm width, 1930 mm height, 2680 mm wheel base and 180 mm ground clearance and the boot volume of 460 litres. Other variants are 4456 mm long and 1995 mm tall. The suspensions are independent with coil spring and anti roll bar at the front and multi link with coil spring at the rear.
A rugged body and the off-roading capability are the plus points of the Mahindra Scorpio New. The competition comes from the likes of the Renault Duster, the Tata Safari Storme and the Mahindra XUV 500.
