One of the most familiar images in the minds of people who grew up during the 1980 through early 1990s would be that of someone riding a bulky scooter. As we remember those days, automatically, the jingle of Hamara Bajaj from the Bajaj scooter commercial seems to play in our minds. Despite the bulk and apparent unbalanced appearance, scooters were more popular than bikes in those days. However, as the bikes became popular due to their better build, balance, mileages and the like, scooters soon became unpopular.

The arrival of gearless scooters changed the scenario once again in favour of scooters. Soon, many people, especially the youth, favoured these rides. Now, these gearless wonders have become an integral part of many office goers and daily commuters. Here is a look at some of the popular scooters in the market – existing and upcoming.

Hero Scooters - The leading motorcycle manufacturer in the world, Hero MotoCorp, is a master when it comes to making scooters as well. Hero Scooters like Pleasure and Maestro are well received by the buyers. Their popularity has increased over the time and hence, Hero is now all set to introduce more models in the market. Accordingly, Hero Leap, the first hybrid scooter in India, is ready for launch. Apart from the Leap, Hero is lining up Dare, a 125 cc scooter with 9.38 PS power, for launch. Another scooter that can be expected to hit the road this year is the 110 cc Dash. In addition, the 150 cc Zir is also being readied for launch, even though it could be seen on roads only in 2016.

Honda Scooters – Honda Activa 125 is one of the most popular scooter models of the country. Whatever it lacks due to the pretty boring and drab looks, it makes up in performance. According to industry insiders, a 150 cc premium scooter with disc brakes and ABS is on cards.

Mahindra Scooters – With Gusto, Mahindra has proved to be a master player in the scooter segment. It is expected to follow the act by offering a 100 cc entry-level scooter or a 125 cc scooter.

Suzuki Scooters – Models like Access, Swish and Let’s have done well for Suzuki. It could also put the Burgman on sale, although many suggest that it is a highly unlikely event.

TVS Scooters – The success of Scooty Zest 110, Jupiter and Wego might lead to the introduction of newer models like TVS Graphite. Check TVS Jupiter on http://bikeportal.in/newbikes/tvs/jupiter/

Piaggio/Vespa Scooters – It is likely that the current Vespa LX 125 will be offered in different variants. Vespa Primavera and Piaggio Fly might be seen on road this year.

Yamaha Scooters – Yamaha is expected to follow up the success of Ray with an array of scooters.
