Toyota's 1994 introduction of the Toyota RAV4 marked a significant milestone in the global compact SUV and crossover market.The Toyota RAV4 emerged as a compact SUV that combined the benefits of a large SUV with the maneuverability of a sedan. The RAV4's fifth-door version, currently in its third generation in Japan and fourth generation in other markets, remains a popular and dependable crossover. First Generation (XA10): 1994-2000

The XA-10 Toyota RAV4 was launched in Japan in 1994, featuring a unique platform combining elements from the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Carina, and available in three and five-door versions. The RAV4 has two 1,998 cc petrol I4 engines, one of which was replaced by a 3S-GE I4 for increased power, and comes with two gearboxes. The base units have a five-speed manual, while other trim levels have a four-speed automatic, with the three-door version given the Japanese model code E-SXA 10 G. The 1997 Toyota RAV4 was named Automobile of the Year, and in 1998, a soft top three-door version was introduced, along with an EV for fleet lease.

Second Generation (XA-20): 2000-2005

The XA-20 second generation of the Toyota RAV4, launched in 2000, features front-wheel drive in lower trim levels and all-wheel drive in upper echelons. The base models have a 1,794 cc petrol I4 engine, with higher trim levels offering a 1,998 cc petrol I4 and 1,995 cc diesel engine. In 2003, the 1,998 cc petrol engine was replaced with a 2,362 cc petrol I4, offering 160 bhp and 220 N-m torque, with options for five-speed manual and four-speed automatic.


Toyota's second-generation vehicles feature anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, air conditioning, height-adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker CD stereo, and power windows, mirrors, and seats. The sport package includes a mesh grille, bonnet scoop, roof rack, sport pedals, heated mirrors, gray bumpers, fender flares, sport fabric seats, alloy wheels, heated seats, sunroof, and keyless entry. The 2004 RAV4 model saw exterior styling changes, equipment improvements, and the introduction of a larger 2,362 cc engine.

Third Generation (XA-30): 2005-2016

Toyota redesigned the RAV4 in 2006 with an Electric Power Steering system and two wheelbases. The company discontinued the mini SUV in 2006, reintroducing the Toyota Urban Cruiser in 2009. The third generation RAV4 offers eleven powerplant options in eleven different global markets, providing ample power for buyers.The vehicle has a base engine of 1,998 cc petrol I4 with 150 bhp and 195 N-m torque, and a top engine of 3,456 cc V6 with 270 bhp and 333 N-m torque.


The RAV4 offers diesel engines with two options, a 1,995 cc D-4D and a 2,241 cc D-CAT, and six gearbox options depending on the original market. The RAV4s come in various options including manuals, automatics, and CVTs, with most being all-wheel drive, though front-wheel drive units are also available. The Toyota RAV4's third generation features a third-row seat, suitable for two small children, only available in North America and Japan, but can be exported.

Fourth Generation

The 2009 RAV4 underwent a minor cosmetic refresh, featuring a modern, aerodynamic front end and a slight tweak to the rear. The RAV4 lineup has been enhanced with features such as integrated turn signals, a backup camera, satellite navigation, keyless entry, push button start, and a multi-function instrument display. The Toyota RAV4 was replaced in 2016 with the Toyota C-HR in Japan, and a hybrid version was introduced in some markets but not in Japan.
