What’s Water Got To Do With It?

Your body is 60% water, most of Earth's surface is covered in water, and you drink it daily, making it a unique and essential part of our existence. BMW uses a water injection system to cool the intake charge in the S55 twin-turbo inline six engine, which powers the M4 GTS. Oldsmobile introduced a methyl-water injection system on their 1962-63 Jetfire production models, which is not a new concept. The system failed on most units due to owners forgetting to refill the reservoir tank with Oldsmobile's "Turbo-Rocket" fluid, leading to a negative perception and its scrapping.

Performance

Turbocharged engines require cooler air intake for increased power, but designers face challenges in preventing air temperatures exceeding 100°C, compromising power. Jurgen Poggel, head of engine development for M GmbH, has experienced temperatures drop as low as 49°C in extreme conditions when water is injected into hot air.The cooler state prevents engine knock, fuel detonation, and enables the turbos to generate an additional boost of 21.6 psi, compared to the 17.2 in the lower level M4.The M4 GTS offers a significant increase in horsepower to 493 bhp, with an additional 49 bhp when equipped with the Competition Package.

The Harry Potter-style magic can be achieved using any liquid, and BMW could have used the same mixture as Oldsmobile in the Jetfire for similar or better results.Most other mixtures would have increased the amount of harmful gases emitted by the GTS. Manufacturers should consider the fact that distilled water does not change emissions due to its non-combustible nature.

The system requires a 4.9L tank hidden under the floor in the boot to be filled every fourth or fifth top off under average driving conditions. BMW prepared the M4 GTS for potential water system issues, including potential freezes during winter, as the water system's water consumption changes with track conditions. The engine automatically switches to the tuning of the 444 bhp M4's when the water reservoir is dry, and all water lines drain when the engine is shut off. The system will prime quickly upon startup and be ready before a sane driver calls for 5,000 rpms.

Other Features

BMW's GTS M4 model features carbon-fiber features such as a carbon-fiber bonnet, roof, strut brace, driveshaft, rear wing, front splitter, and rear bulkhead.  Carbon-ceramic brake rotors and i3-inspired interior trim offset weight added by water injection system, while ultra-light carbon-fiber seats and suspension set-up provide additional weight savings. The GTS model upgrades the M4's basic system, including front struts, rear subframe with multilink, and limited-slip diff, with three-way adjustable dampers and adjustable spring perches.BMW's M4 GTS, equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, achieved a 7:27.9 lap around Nurburgring Nordschleife, surpassing a Ferrari 458 Italia's performance. The M4 GTS's asking price is over double the base model M4, largely due to the high cost of upgrades. BMW's asking price for the limited run of 700 units worldwide reflects its anticipation of selling out quickly.
