The 2017 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro offers near-pink-drop silence, nearly as quiet as a Rolls-Royce Phantom at 115 km/h. A sports car's quality is often measured by its deep, throaty exhaust note, often accompanied by a well-tuned turbocharged engine. Noise deprivation increases the likelihood of hearing speeding tickets pile up more than your A4.

Engines

The new A4 offers a mild refresh on the exterior, but under the clamshell bonnet, it features an improved powerplant with an iron block I4. The setup enhances power to 252 bhp and 370 N-m torque, up 32 bhp and 21 N-m from the previous model year, with minimal turbo lag. Driving enthusiasts can choose a six-speed manual gearbox, while the standard gearbox is a seven-speed dual clutch automatic, replacing the previous eight-speed.  Audi representatives claim the dual-clutch offers a torque-converter feel, but drivers report the gearbox often shifts to the highest gear to boost mileage.

To enjoy the dual-clutch, select sport mode, set stability control, hold brake and accelerator simultaneously, rev to 3000, and quickly drop the brake. The Quattro system ensures a spin-free launch, allowing the 1665 kg A4 to reach 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than last year's model. The A4 can achieve 11.47 km/l combined if it's fed petrol, completing the quarter mile in 13.9 seconds at 161 km/h.

Performance

The 2017 A4 Quattro's weight is primarily distributed over the front tires due to its four-wheel drive system and slightly ahead-positioned engine. The A4's Quattro system initially allocates 40% of torque to the front wheels, with the remaining balance adjusted to meet driving demands. The A4's four-wheel drive system uses Hankook tires with a 0.90 g grip, but the front wheels may wear out sooner, making it less competitive with BMW 3-series.

The A4's understeer system automatically pulses brakes for cornering, but doesn't feel rear wheels control. Adaptive damping suspension lowers ride height by 10mm. The system incorporates dampers with comfort, auto, and dynamic modes, adjusting stiffness automatically or allowing for wallow before tightening, and increasing dynamic stiffness. The power steering system adjusts to sloppiness in Auto or Comfort mode, improving with Sport mode. The Sport package lowers the A4 by 23mm but cannot be paired with adjustable shocks.

Other Features

The A4 comes in various trim levels, with the base Premium offering features like a rearview camera, leather, xenon headlights, sunroof, power seats, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Premium Plus trim level includes LED headlights, larger wheels, 755-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system, anti-theft system, heated seats, and S-line body kit. The Prestige package includes HUD, digital gauges, navigation, larger screen, blind-spot monitor, rear collision warning, heated seats, steering wheel, front seats, electronically adjustable suspension, and Audi Driver Assistance package.

The 2017 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro prioritizes top speed and quick braking, with a braking system capable of stopping from 115 km/h within 47 meters, matching a Porsche's speed. The 2017 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro is a top-tier vehicle known for its sophisticated design, advanced technology, and refined interior. The new A4, while lacking in driving dynamics and exterior styling, is adept and elegant, but needs improvement in comparison to German offerings. The A4 model embodies a quiet competence that is easily misunderstood.
