Why do we need an 80% cut?

The world’s leading climate scientists agree that to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the average global temperature should not rise more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The UK Government and the EU have accepted this goal and the science behind it. To stand a good chance of staying below a 2°C rise will require a minimum 50% global reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The UK Government gave public support to this conclusion, when calling for a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 at this summer’s G8 meeting.
