Sony Drops Plans For The Amazing Spiderman Shared Universe; Lists Other Upcoming Movies
The friendly neighborhood Spiderman has entertained us for several years now. Peter Parker’s journey on the silver screen started with Sam Raimi’s 2002 blockbuster Spiderman. The movie starred Tobey Maguire in the titular role alongside Willem Defoe (Green Goblin), Kristen Dunst, and James Franco playing important roles. Sam Raimi went on to direct two more sequels Spiderman-2 and 3. There were reports for a fourth installment, but things never panned out.
The Amazing Spider-Man Franchise Failure
The end of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films resulted in a reboot backed by Sony titled The Amazing Spider-Man. The movie starred Andrew Garfield as Spiderman, Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn), and Jamie Foxx (Electro). This franchise also fizzled out after two films and took down Sony’s plans of introducing an Amazing Spiderman shared universe. Even though the project was shelved, there are a few feature films still in the pipeline, although not related to the scrapped shared universe.
If Sony had introduced the shared universe, we would have witnessed the proper introduction of evil characters such as Venom and the team of sinister six. An official deal between Sony and Marvel bought Spiderman to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though the third and fourth installments in the Amazing Spiderman franchise were canceled, Sony has gone ahead with a plan to make and release a few highly anticipated films.
Spiderman- 3: A Step Ahead for both Sony and Marvel
This will be the third film starring Tom Holland as the friendly neighborhood superhero. After a deal brokered between both the entertainment companies, Tom Holland’s character made a debut in Captain America: Civil War followed by Spiderman: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and finally Spiderman: Far From Home. After Far from Home, Sony and Marvel had a fallout and left Spiderman’s future in limbo. However, a new deal was soon inked, and a couple of days later, a third film starring Tom Holland was announced. The upcoming feature film is set for a release in 2021.
Sinister Six: A Villainous Team with a Potential Future in the MCU
It is one project everyone hopes to see soon. The Amazing Spiderman introduced a few characters to the team when Harry Osborn helped them procure suits from Oscorp to create havoc. We also saw the suits of Vulture and Dr. Octopus. The end credits of the movie also showed schematic designs of the weapons used by villains.
The present spiderman films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have teased a potential appearance of the Sinister Six soon. We saw the Vulture in Spiderman: Homecoming and Mysterio in Spiderman: Far From Home. Both of them are a part of the evil team.
Venom 2: A Sequel in the Spiderman Shared Universe
The upcoming spiderman spin-offs include Venom 2 starring Tom Hardy. Venom will pick up from where it left off. The end credits showed Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) visit Woody Harrelson’s character in jail. Right before the end credits scene ends, Harrelson’s character says that whenever he gets out of jail, there will be carnage. This showcases as a platform that will serve as the story in Venom 2.
Morbius is an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is scheduled for a 2021 release from an original 2020 premiere due to coronavirus pandemic. The story will revolve around the role of Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), who suffers from a rare blood disease. He then tries out a dangerous cure that turns him into a vampire.
