The lifespan of social media networks are like an NBA finals basketball game for marketing companies. While Myspace hit its peak in just a few years — rest in peace — Facebook seems to be the medium that never dies. Twitter, however, is a constant reminder that we don’t always see what’s coming. Is this social network on its way out?

Studies Suggest…

The stacks of cash are increasingly flowing from traditional marketing avenues to digital marketing. If marketing companies are advertising online, then where is their money going?

In a 2015 study, 83 advertising agencies were surveyed to analyze the trends in the industry. Facebook, the social engine for all ages, dominated with 96 percent of companies saying they would most likely use this to advertise on.

The Instagram growth continues as 63 percent of companies said they would use that avenue over the 56 percent who agreed that Twitter was a good use of funds. It is important to note that Snapchat was not included in this survey, perhaps because advertisers haven’t figured out how to utilize its full potential.

Chris Gilbert, the senior social strategist at Kettle said, “We’re seeing almost all of our clients shifting if not all of their budgets from Twitter to Instagram. Marketers typically want to be where the audience is.” Marketing companies agree with his words, as mobile advertising continues to be the fastest growing advertising channel.

Twitter Continues to Fight Back

Twitter denies the survey’s truth. The company suggests that it offers the most powerful creative canvas for marketers. With the introduction of polls and gif usage, they could be right.

Most recently, Twitter is sitting at 130,000 monthly active users while Instagram is climbing beyond 200,000. With Instagram ranked as the top social network for teens three years running, how much longer will Twitter hold on? Only time will tell if the brave face they’re wearing was only for show.
