Image The Indian Railways is a humungous network of trains carting millions of passengers and freight on a daily basis. It has constantly endeavoured to offer innovative services to passengers. Modern technology has been used by Indian Railways. First it introduced online booking of tickets. Next it developed an online application to track the position of trains in the network.

The latter is called RailRadar, which is an interactive map to track movement of trains, currently travelling through India. This was the first time any public transport could be tracked in the real time on the net or mobile. This application was developed by CRIS (Centre for Railway Information System) and RailYatri.in. To begin with, log on to railradar.trainenquiry.com and key in number of the train and you are ready to go. This service provides information like on time/ delay status of train, route of train, train’s direction, next halt/ station etc. You can easily track your train.

Although tracking is said to be ‘live’, there is some delay. The data on the map is not updated in real time. This is because of complexity of data and lack of using GPS. The information on RailRadar for train running status is always 5 minutes late. The service is also available without integration with Google maps in enquiry.indianrail.gov.in/ntes, where all information is presented in the form of a table that includes stations, expected departure time, expected arrival time, actual arrival time, actual departure time, distance from station, any delay etc.

The latest development in technology by the CRIS is a mobile application of RailRadar. Passengers can track arrival/departure of trains, as well as spoturtrain on mobile phones. CRIS has enhanced the train enquiry system with this mobile application. It has also developed a desktop application for train enquiries on Windows 8 platform with aid of Microsoft. NTES (National Train Enquiry System) is the backend system of the Indian Railways, which provides information to the public on position of trains on real time basis. It uses several interfaces like website (trainenquiry.com), national train enquiry number (139), touch screens, mobile interfaces, display boards in stations and station enquiry counters.

An NTES website’s interface along with mobile version was launched in September 2013 and proved useful for passengers. The features of the new mobile application include the ‘spot your train’ feature, which provides information such as expected arrival time, current position and departure time. The feature of Trains schedule provides a train’s complete schedule with stoppages en route, scheduled departure/ arrival at stations, day count and distance. In the query-‘trains between stations’- one can access a list of trains plying between stations. The mobile app also has a feature called as ‘cancelled trains,’ which displays all trains that have been cancelled. Cancelled trains include those that have been completely cancelled or partially cancelled, in some part of its route.

Answers are also available on queries like diverted and rescheduled trains. The App was primarily developed for Windows 8 platform. It may be developed for other mobile platforms in the near future and make train tracking simple.
