Different varieties of washers and their uses

A washer is a thin metallic plate that is used to keep the screws, nuts and bolts tight. It consists of a hole and has an outer diameter two times more than the width of inner diameter. Washer help in distributing the load of threaded fastener and ensure a reliable bolted joint. There are numerous varieties of washers available in the market. These are offered in various material options and come in varying finishes, thickness, diameters and grades. Majority of the washers are used to disseminate the clamp load employed by a threaded fastener. Others are designed in such a way that they keep the fastener locked in a fixed place or insulated from electricity and moisture. The last category of the washers is fitted on shafts and work as a spacer.

  • Flat Washers: Flat washers are the most common type of washers that is available in the market. These are offered in numerous configurations and have inner and outer shape that can be square, hexagonal, rectangular or round. They have flat top as well as bottom surfaces and are used to distribute the fastener load. Flat washers are hard enough to bear any type of pressure but are they can-not hinder any motion. On the basis of shape and industry standard, flat washers can be subdivided in to numerous categories encompassing dock, structural, fender and thru-hard washers.

  • Shoulder Washers: Shoulder washers, which are also known as flange or step washers look just the way a crowned top hat would appear. They are usually made of non-conductive material and are used as a bushing to insulate shafts that are provided within electronic equipment. However, they can-not be used in humid environments.

  • Tab Washers: These washers are manufactured using both metallic as well as nonmetallic materials and consist of internal or external tabs. These tabs stop washer from rotating with the shaft. Tab washers are available in numerous configurations.

  • Lock washers: These washers are manufactured using hardened metal and consist of internal or external serrations. Some of lock washers also have helical-shape split ring.

  • Countersunk Washers: These washers appear like a dog bowl except for a hole in bottom. The head of the countersunk washer is usually angled up to 90 degrees and they are known for their aesthetic appeal. Countersunk washers features flanges and you can use flat or oval head countersunk screws on them. 

  • Spring Washers: These washers are metallic in nature and are used to check fastener movement. Spring washers are available in three types and are used in aerospace companies.
