Why Drilling Fluids are necessary:

Drilling in more challenging wells and that also drilling longer and deeper have been possible due to developed technology of drilling and drilling fluids. In early age i.e. near third century BC Chinese used drilling fluids in form of water. Drilling fluids are necessary to recover oil up to maximum extent and in short span of time.

Function of Clear Brine Drilling Fluids to properly, must be kept stable at the surface as well as down the hole. They are used in preparation of oil well drilling equipments like screens, liners and packers etc. Besides this proper selection of such fluids for its intended purpose is also very crucial as it may react chemically with produced gas or oil leading to corrosion. Hence such technical issues are solved by adding additives like iron oxide which is anti corrosive material.

High Characteristic of Drilling Fluids:

Drilling fluids helps in pressure control of well by holding the pressure of gases and rock formation. As the density of drilling fluid is high it exerts its pressure on walls of well which in turn helps in drilling. Use of drilling fluids is no doubt advantageous but its disposal after use is a great challenge which is also taken care of by new developed technology i.e. drilling fluids are made reusable by adding additives which decrease the change in viscosities of fluids with time at elevated temperature.

Clear brine fluids have versatile nature. It is used to provide hydrostatic pressure to drill bits, for removing drilling cuts from well and for keeping drilling assembly cool. Many available drilling fluids are used because of their high characteristic densities. They can be used in combinations for providing required densities. Thus proper selection of brines or combinations of brines is essential for cost effective drilling.

Most popularly used combinations of salts are Zinc Bromide and Calcium Bromide Mixture, Calcium bromide and calcium chloride mixture, Sodium chloride and sodium bromide mixture.

Toxicity Value:
Sodium bromide is used as drilling fluid where required density is 12.5Ibs/gal. It can be used with other salts like sodium chloride and zinc bromide. It is                especially used in situation where chloride is not desirable and calcium is not preferred due to formation of carbonates and sulphates with calcium. There are multiple uses of it. In early 1900s it was popularly used as sedative and anticonvulsant. In combination with chlorine it is used as disinfectant for swimming pools, used to control bacterial and fungal growth for industrial water and for sewage treatment plants. But it is mainly used as drilling chemical for oil and natural gas industries. It is non explosive and non flammable but may release bromine fumes upon heating. It has low toxicity value.
