Apple Gets Patent For Wrap-Around Display
The tech giant has been bringing innovations to its latest phone.
Apple future smartphone –probably dubbed as iPhone 8 –is likely to have a curved wrap-around screen. This assumption has been made on the premise of a patent awarded to the tech giant on Tuesday. The Silicon Valley tech titan has opined that because of the rectangular form, the rear surfaces and side of the handset remained under used.
Apple has filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) where it focused on a device with “wrap-around display.” The technology will enable a continuous loop for the images and videos. Additionally, the screen’s expanse will be increased displaying five apps’ icons in a vertical row. Currently, Apple’s latest iPhone 6s models offer four icons on the same space.
The primitive use of the sides and rear surfaces has been restricted to buttons and switches with limited functionality and a strict location. However, with the probable wrap-around screens, the devices will not have a physical buttons for volume or screen locking/unlocking. In their places, for volume; there would be a feature on the screen which will expand when the user would tap longer on it. Similarly, the tech giant is introducing “multi touch gesture” which could act as a mean of locking and unlocking the device.
With reference to the patent obtained by the Cupertino, Calif. firm, the display will be of either glass or plastic. It highlighted how a glass enclosure can be used for a bendable display to show images on glass. In this way, the handset will have two screens. The patent explained, “In this way, an illusion of depth perception can be presented mimicking a 3D experience.”
Also, a separate patent awarded on Tuesday indicated tech giant’s interest in augmented reality. This technology enables the gadget to transfer images onto a real setting. The technology was explained with help of the following example: if a person holds up a device –integrated with new technology –over, let’s say, a painting in the museum then a lot of information related to the painting will pop up overlaying the image.
The world’s most valuable company has explained that its latest technology can be used in a tour bus. The tourists can hold up their devices to famous monuments and information could overlay the object.
Augmented reality is the next big thing. A lot of companies have been working on the technology. Lately, Lenovo has launched an augmented reality smartphone powered by Project Tango –Alphabet Inc.’s Google’s technology.
