Profiles need attention.

I had the following post under my last one. One of our moderators sent me a message about it. So I've put it back in, minus the offending bits. Hope you get the gist of the original.

Wasn't aware that it would be considered advertising, and can see how it might fall into the category, so I've copied it here so that others can learn from my error and also, that the essence of my message is not wasted:

Hi Thea, yeah, i don't like pop-ups either, but i was referring to a text box like i'm typing into to make this reply...

Google still ok's text within framesets providing a link is given to that frameset so the information can be used from there to display the correct ads.

Oops..and yes, I get the framed text box idea, however not everyone has frames or pop ups enabled and they can be a darn nuisance.

A text box that opens would be no different clicking a text box link to clicking an About Me page link that someone has chosen to add into their profile.
If a text box pops up each time I clicked someone's profile, I'd go nuts! :)

Text boxes are also not allowed to cover Google ads (in their guidelines I believe) plus other ads may get covered over too.

I have actually noticed some profiles that are much larger than mine, yet mine won't allow additional characters.

I also notice that there seems to be no difference in membership levels and profile sizes.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking... If i have a request for a contact i want to be able to view their profile without having to take extra steps to view additional information... I want to read about "who" the person is... but not spend hours trying to find the information.

If space was an issue, it could be set up in a framed text box with scrolling activated.

I'm not talking about having a 10,000 word profile, but 500 words instead of 500 characters would be slightly more informative.

For me the problem with linking to another page to see an "about me" page is an added step I have to take. When I get a request for adding contact, I want to be able to go to the person's page and get a good overview without clicking a link to go somewhere else. I don't want to have to click through 2 or 3 pages just find out a bit about someone to decide whether to approve or deny them.

Personally, I don't think it needs more space. We might need to dig through a lengthy discourse to get to the essence of the person.

Pictures speak a thousand words, I'd love to see mandatory upload of a personal photo to be a member here, that may improve quality of membership.
So many people hide behind the image of an object or logo.
With social sites it is nice to see a face. Sorry if I offend anyone here, it's ONE personal opinion, so please don't take it to heart. :)

I agree too, more space would be better, as my mentors have said, personal stories sell, as well as pictures. Mostly, our profiles are supposed to be place where people can get to know us and create a connection. That way, when we write an article, it gets noticed/read because partially already know what we're going to say because of what they know about us already. To go by picture and ads alone is like........judging a book by it's cover when all the real goodies is on the pages inside. :-

I have to agree, it's hard enough to write any kind of meaningful profile... put a tight limit on length and it gets even more difficult to do!

I think it's pretty short of space myself. It could use a little more space for us to put a little more about ourselves. It's a little hard to squeeze any real information in a small space like that.

YES... that is small... and as anyone knows... to write short condensed words that tell the story is very difficult to do.

I agree with Bj in that seeing ads in profiles tells a lot about a person and there would be those who would only advertise if there were 50 or 50,000 characters, but for those who want to actually "social network" at a social network site, it would be nice to actually tell people about who we are...
