I enjoy a Math question or two. So I tossed my marbles in the air and decided to look at how they fell.
After doing a little bean counting (or is that marble counting), I found that results as shown in the example on your post to be looking at just one side of the coin. You showed how compounding works best if you start early, and the results look impressive. But factoring in another compounding issue, the dreaded inflation, the early starter (if he/she stops and relies on compounding to do th
Of course, I'd rather have a penny that doubles itself daily for 30 days because on the thirtieth day I shall have something in excess of $5m. However, give me a million now and I can find a far more secure and viable investment!
@Cindy, I saw the post you refer to. Would it also be a good idea to make kids aware that the real world does not always follow the simple MATH of this example and the one on your post?
Things like the GFC and crashes of Investment companies and banks can play merry hell with the compounding of savings of people.
Enjoy your game of marbles and Bloody Mary and lunch. I'm off to play my own games.
It is a math question... plain and simple.. @Neville you can not play with my marbles either. The post is on my site for kids about MONEY.... !
Many of you would be really ticked about seeing what the benefit is of starting to save EARLY.... But then it too is a math thingy.... ! Nothing but a Math Thingy
I am taking my marbles and meeting Joe for Bloody Mary's and then LUNCH!
Ahhh! Compounding, the tool of scammers! Yes, the math works, but only if EVERY penny doubles each day.
Promises if incredible returns should be looked at very carefully. So what would be the return after 60 days? The tools I use make that a number too big to write! Interesting math problem, but sustainable over the long term?
In practical terms I think Warren has got the right idea.
If your penny doubles for 30 days that's 5 368 709.12 $
So who would not like to get 5,3x more money for the long run?
It's like if you are building a business you need to think about the long run, you might not earn today or tomorrow. But if you keep building it and putting your effort into it, you will make fortuntes. That's not math, that's fact ;)

Warren, you are too down to earth here :)
Of course, any program that promises "we will double your money every day without fail" is a scam. Unfortunately, some people don't get it yet.
