Inasmuch as it is great to lead by example, you can actually promote a product from its intrinsic values. For example, I speak well of a Ferrari but I don't use that product. Not yet anyway. It is my dream car and I keep the dream alive.
When dealing with a wide range of products it is impossible to use each one yourself but its benefits to other users is a good enough indicative. I don't use all while selling these.
I don't like promoting physical products. I have done so in the past and i did use the products myself. But it really put me off, so i quit that kind of marketing.
Now I only promote e-products, and yes, i use them myself.
What I have found when it comes to internet marketing products is that many of them are offering the same thing in a different package. For instance if it is a product about traffic generation then if you have been around the internet for some time you know that there is basically only a set number of ways to get traffic either free or paid. There's nothing wrong in promoting products that you don't use and affiliate marketers have been doing it ever since affiliate networks arrived on the scene. Your success (conversion rate) depends on your marketing skills.
Of course, you have to perform due diligence to ensure that the product you are going to promote is not a dud or else your reputation w
I would love to buy some of the stuff I put designs on at zazzle.com... also, if I were able to use the app properly, I'd definitely buy some stuff at constrvct.com were I able to "design" some stuff there...

I prefer to promote products that I have used for some time. Then I am in a better position to answer questions about the product.
