I think that depends on the domain name you are looking to buy. If the domain name is taken, buying a domain with high page rank and domain age is going to cost you a lot.

If its for a product or company, it will be fine to buy an old domain..This is just because when clients are searching for a WHOIS of domain, it will show the registered date. Hence it will help to vanish an image of "new company". People like to deal with a bit old and established companies.
