Zonfrillo is cooking up a Storm in Adelaide
Just when we thought award-winning Adelaide chef Jock Zonfrillo couldn’t impress us any further, bang - he opens the door to Bistro Blackwood, sister establishment to city favourite Restaurant Orana.
Orana has long- cemented its place in Adelaide’s fine dining scene so Bistro Blackwood was a stroke of genius offering pretty much the same quality and style of food yet in a more approachable setting at a lower price point.
Both are among the top 10 Adelaide restaurants and with good reason.
They have become firm favourites with local foodies and the unwavering quality of food and service is a winning combination.
It’s launch, a little over two years ago has opened up Zonfrillo’s unique style, passion and flair for food to the masses, making it accessible to food lovers who prefer a more relaxed dining environment.
His work has not gone unnoticed, and Orana picked up the 2018 Basque Culinary World Prize less than a year after being named as Australia’s Restaurant of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Magazine.
The prestigious prize is awarded to a chef who has worked to improve society through gastronomy.
Zonfrillo has certainly done this, and has dedicated his career to working with indigenous communities to develop a unique cuisine and support the areas from where he sources native ingredients.
‘Giving back more you take’, Zonfrillo said was one of the major things he has learned along the way in his indigenous culinary journey.
Describing the first Australians as ‘true cooks and food inventors’, he is acutely aware and respectful of the humble farmers who worked the land and lived off the fruits of their labour.
This is his inspiration and he has expertly incorporated many traditional ingredients into his imaginative and exciting menus.
Combined with a passion for clean, fresh flavours, the clever use of seasonal produce and interesting cooking techniques, such as the in-house fire pit, Zonfrillo is a true Australian success story.
Scottish-born Zonfrillo was also named Australia’s Hottest Chef in 2017 by The Weekend Australian Magazine’s Hot 50 Awards.
Restaurant Orana and Bistro Blackwood are now considered as two of the best places to eat in Adelaide.
The city is awash with eateries, but good restaurants like this are hard to come by, which is why their following has grown so rapidly.
When Blackwood opened, Zonfrilli described it as a ‘project’ for the Orana team.
They have truly embraced his vision and under his tutelage, have delivered it in spades.

Whether you are after an upmarket, fine dining experience, or a casual family get together (with plenty of choice for kiddies), Zonfrillo delivers.
