On October 3, 2012, the Ministry of Electronics and
Information Technology (MeitY) (formerly DeitY) issued the "Electronics
and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration)
Order, 2012" for fifteen types of electronic devices. On November 13,
2014, MeitY added fifteen more market segments to this request. On October 24,
2016, MeitY published an Indian Standard for 'Indian Language Support for
Mobile Phones.' On August 23, 2017, MeitY added another thirteen product
categories to this order.

On September 5, 2017, the Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued a notification for five items under the Solar Pv
systems, Equipment, Devices, and Components Goods (Requirements for Compulsory
Registration) Order, 2017.

According to the Regulations, no one shall produce,
store for sale, import, sell, or distribute items that do not meet the Indian
standards stipulated in the order and do not bear the Standard Mark with a
specific registration number received from the BIS.

Standards provides manufacturers with a licence to use or apply a Standard Mark
with a specific R-number. Under Scheme - II of Schedule - II of the BIS
