Well! I am sure this is an inescapable question which every dietitian is being asked about. What does a dietitian eat? What exactly do they eat all day and manage to stay in shape?  If you’re anticipating an answer like wholegrain, lentils, tofu, etc. well… you are not wrong! The truth is that they do consume these healthy foods, but another side of the story is that they don’t shy away from indulging in guilty pleasures here and then, but the trick is to be moderate.

This blog is about bursting your bubble and enlightening you with a few diet principles. Some of you should know right away that staying in shape does not entail living by rules and regulations all the time. In fact, it’s about learning to eat right and an attempt to set it as a default setting for your lifestyle.Do dietitians also indulge?

Dietitians also indulge in sinful desserts and not-so-healthy comfort foods. They also indulge in birthday cakes, brownie, burgers and pizzas. But you may be wondering how do they still manage slipping into their skinny jeans? The truth is, we dietitians have a less complex diet than assumed and have the knowledge to pick up facts over fiction. The key lies in eating in moderation. The moment we eat that slice of cake, we are again back on track to eating right. Yes we still want that extra slice of cake, but we are aware about the calories and other nutritional facts. So having that extra slice would go against the calorie count and we stop right there. It’s all about reining your senses or in other terms-”self-control.”

How do you compensate for your little retreats?

Social outings are unavoidable, and no one is asking you to absolutely refuse those greasy, oil-dripping, mouth-watering dishes laid out beautifully on the tables when you go and attend weddings.  In fact surprisingly, you can still eat and enjoy all that without putting on that extra pound just by eating the right portions. For instance, if I go out for a meal then I make sure that I compensate the calories by going easy on the previous and/or the next meals. One heavy meal should replace frequent other small retreats for the day.

How do dietitians compensate for their indulgences?

A Dietitian’s diet is presumed to be the epitome of a healthy balance. Sticking to a balanced diet is easier said than done even for us. But we believe that eating healthy is truly part of a holistic lifestyle. Once you start eating nutrient dense foods and inculcate this discipline in your daily routine, it soon becomes a habit. You can count on my word for it! Gradually, you would actually start enjoying this healthy lifestyle by your own choice! Of course there are many tempting unhealthy options which tease your taste buds, just as my taste buds crave for them, but here’s when self-control comes into play.

“I practice what I preach.” Remember - Do indulge moderately, but don’t binge! It’s never a single instance of indulgence that causes health issues. It’s the consistency of making poor food choices which makes you unfit and overweight. Do not put any food off-limit completely, just stick to the right portion sizes.

In a country like India where lakhs of people struggle to lose weight, a sound nutritional advice is a must in order to fight the battle. When it comes to eating healthy being prepared and self-motivated can make you win half the battle.
