Get de-addicted for a better life. Talk and express.
A lot of us are allured into trying toxic substances, even if just for once in our lifetime. So intriguing do these look. We find ourselves thinking, ‘what’s the charm? Why do so many people find themselves being pulled towards these substances?’ It’s very natural for a person’s intrigued to be aroused.
Once you’re addicted to alcohol and/or drugs, it’s very hard to find a way back to sobriety. In fact, sobriety starts looking like a distant dream to us since we can’t imagine going back to the state when we didn’t indulge in some kind of activity which got us high. The hit that one gets after consumption of these substances is very addictive, as it works as an escapade for us. There may be various reasons for us to pick up these bad habits. It may be peer pressure, being overstressed due to work, failed relationship, dealing with family problems, not being accepted easily into social circles, anxiety for success in a certain profession, or sometimes simply boredom and inquisitiveness to try something new just for the kick. Whatever may be the reason, we may start with very little consumption, but don’t be too surprised if you suddenly find yourself craving for more and more each day.
Those who drink alcohol find themselves more ‘free’ in terms of expressing their feelings. This leads to misjudgement that alcohol acts as a stimulant. It does not! We find ourselves breaking the barriers of social boundaries and easing up to things because alcohol affects those portions of the brain that deals with judgement or decision making. When a person consumes alcohol, supply of oxygen is cut off to the brain. Each time a person becomes intoxicated, lack of oxygen to the brain cells kills thousands of cells. Other than this, excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs also affects our Central Nervous System (CNS), digestive system, sleeping pattern, productivity levels at work, gives us a large number of other diseases. Drugs make us lose appetite and we soon start living on drugs and ignoring nutrition.
It is clearly very hard to get de-addicted but it’s not impossible. Set realistic goals for yourself, and take small measures each day to bring a change in your lifestyle. Remember why you relied upon drugs and alcohol at the first place, and work to eliminate those situations from your life. Avoid people, situations and social gatherings where you will be exposed to these substances. In the initial stages when you have only recently begun the process of de-addiction, avoid going to clubs and bars, as they will test your resistance unnecessarily. Cut off from friends who are still into drugs and substance abuse, and choose a sober social circle.
