Various Types of Provers Explained
A meter prover is used to achieve effective and accurate flow meter calibration. These devices are utilized to analyze flow meter readouts and determine their accuracy. Some devices are manual while some are automatic; however, the latest range consists of automatic devices making the entire operation a breeze. One of the key advantages of a well-designed proving system is that any flow meter can be accurately proved without interfering with the normal functioning or operation.
Before we move on to read about various types of meter prover skids, let’s understand how a meter prover system works.
Working of a meter prover system
A meter prover system is aimed at detecting any changes in the amount of liquid or gas flowing through a pipeline at different times. There are sensors installed in each prover which help detect changes in the fluid flow. The main task of a meter prover system is to make sure flow meter readings remain accurate at all times.
Companies manufacturing crude oil sampling systems say that meter provers are indispensable to industrial fluid transport processes.
Now let’s take a look at various meter provers.
1. Ball Prover or Sphere Prover
Ball prover or sphere prover is also known as pipe prover. The system functions on the principle of continuous displacement of fixed liquid amounts between two detector devices. In the process a spherical ball is made to pass through a calibrated section of piping and thus a fixed amount of liquid gets displaced. A similar amount of fluid is evacuated. The meter attached then calculates the fluid moving within the ball prover. This method is used to compare the volume within the pipeline and prover device. If any variations are found, those can be corrected.
2. Small Volume Piston Prover
A small volume piston prover device is used for efficacious meter prover calibration. The mechanism of this prover system is quite similar to a ball prover system. There are quite a few advantages of using this prover system. A small amount of fluid is required for measurement purposes. As compared to bulkier prover systems, this prover offers more accurate readings.
3. Bidirectional Meter Prover
These provers can be referred to as a modified form of ball prover system. The system includes a 4 way valve which enables flow reversal when the direction of the sphere changes.
4. Master Meter Prover
Direct master meter prover system contains the use of a line meter and a master meter connected. The proving is performed at the site of carrier pipeline. Indirect master mete prover on the other hand requires detachment of the gas meter. It is calibrated at a site which is remotely located from the primary location.
