Over the years, handpieces have changed to improve dental experiences. Earlier, low-speed handpieces were used by dentists but they had some drawbacks like comfort, accuracy and efficiency. Then, Air Rotor handpieces were introduced and dentists started utilizing them. After using air rotor handpieces, patients were able to see a significant difference in the whole procedure.

Air Rotor's elements and structure

They are one-piece units and have a slight curve in appearance, often used for rapid removal instead of the low-speed handpiece. Usually it has a general speed of 2 lac to 8 lac rpm. The Air rotor handpiece has a 6 hole standard push button, and 4 holes for water spray.

Airrotor handpiece is an E generator LED handpiece which has a golden cartridge, ceramic bearing. It is self-illuminator and works without a connecting circuit. All air rotor handpieces consist of an air or water spray as a coolant. Air rotor also uses LED light bulbs to generate brighter and whiter light.

Uses of air rotor handpieces

There are multiple uses of air rotor handpieces where we can use them effectively. Some of the common ones are

  • To prepare cavities for restorations or crowns: Air rotor handpiece widens the cavity which should not be more than one third of that intercostal distance. It also ensures proper cooling and prevent overheating of tooth tissues. It uses high efficient burs which make cavity preparation easy and comfortable.

  • To remove tooth structure and create margin: Air rotor handpiece goes 1 millimeter inside the tooth and creates margin by going back and forth. It has larger burs so there is a possibility that it can overcut the tooth structure and remove extra parts which are not required.

  • To remove tooth enamel and tissue: This process is also called air rotor stripping which is intended to improve teeth alignment and long-term maintenance. Air rotor handpiece's bur plays a huge role in this process so a perfect size bur is required otherwise this can be a reason for tissue injuries.

  • To remove some parts of a tooth where there may be a need to create greater margins  Air rotor handpiece rotates and uses its high speed to cut the surface efficiently with less pressure, vibration and heat generation. Patients are also less apprehensive as the procedure doesn't take much time.

Problems Air Rotor Handpieces solve

The rotor handpiece was able to remove tissue more efficiently, precisely and rapidly without any pressure. It can cut smoothly without any feeling of vibration or heat. The patients were comfortable with these handpieces and the chances of injury were reduced to zero.

The rotor handpieces are also called high - speed handpieces because they speed up the whole procedure and make it easier for both patient and dentist. It is a very helpful tool for every dentistry work so almost all dentists own an air rotor handpiece.
