Don't ever treat flood water in unwanted places of your home lightly. Even if the basement of your house has an inch deep flood or is simply damp, it can quickly become a breeding ground for mildew. Mildew can not only damage furniture, carpets and walls, but also lead to deterioration of indoor air quality, which may in turn cause respiratory problems including asthma. Thus in order to prevent such things from happening, it is imperative that you take suitable steps against stagnant flood water within your house. If you can't handle the task individually then it is always advisable to hire an experienced and qualified water damage restoration company. However, given below are some easy tips that can help you to clean your home. Have a look:

1. Immediately get rid of water: There are multiple ways which can be used to get rid of unwanted water. If the level of water is not too high, then you can try do deal with the flood while the professionals are on their way. Make use of buckets, mops and old towels to soak up as much water as possible. Pour it either over the lawn or down the drain. You can also use a wet or dry vacuum. Avoid using extension cords. Your main objective should be to eliminate all conditions that favour the growth of mould and mildew in the affected area of your house

2. Dry out the affected area: Once all the water has been drained out, use equipment such as dehumidifier and fans to dry out the affected area completely. If the incident has taken place during the day, open all windows and doors in the room and let sunlight and air enter inside for quickening up the drying process.

3. Disinfect: After the whole area has become dry, including the drywall, wood beams and insulation, use a good disinfectant to prevent growth of bacteria that might have entered through toilets or sewers (in case the source of the flood was an overflowing sewer or a leaky faucet in the toilet). You will need to sanitise all the affected regions properly as well as the carpets or any other floor covering in the room.

4. Dispose damaged items properly: Instead of throwing away all the damaged household items collect and take them to a recycling centre. Visit your town's waste management website and find out where and how to recycle and restore the water damaged items.
