Having an affordable health insurance plan can save you a lot of trouble in going about your business when it is actually time to deal with medical or health related issues. From finding competent health related professionals and facilities near your home to avoiding fines, the benefits of having a health insurance plan are several, but finding the right health insurance plan may have you doing some homework. When choosing a health insurance plan, following are a few things which you should keep in mind in order to select a plan which meets all your requirements:

Selecting the Right Category:

Health insurance plans are typically categorized into four types:

•    Bronze
•    Silver
•    Gold
•    Platinum

While these four plans have nothing to do with the kind of care you would receive (it is the same across the packages) if you opt for one plan over the other, they do differ in the amount of coverage they offer and the amount you would have to pay. For example, plans belonging to the Platinum category will cover 90% of your medical costs while you will be paying 10% of the amount, whereas those belonging to the Bronze category will cover only 60% of your medical costs with you paying the remaining 40%.

Know the Premium and Deduction:

After getting a health insurance plan, you will be paying a monthly bill to the insurance company. Irrespective of whether or not you use medical services in a given month, you will be required to pay the premium. Other than the ‘premium’, you will also be paying a ‘deductible’ amount.

The ‘deductible’ is the amount you will be paying from your own pocket before you can have your insurance company start covering your medical expenses. For example, having a deductible of $1000 means that you pay a $1000 and only then your plan will be actually implemented. Therefore, before deciding on a plan, make sure to check out the premium, deductible costs so that you know if you would be able to afford the plan or not.

Select the Right Network:

Affordable health insurance in NY has plans which are not only classified according to their ‘metals’ (gold, bronze etc) but are also classified according to how much freedom you would get in terms of selecting your own doctors, how much paperwork you would have to tend to etc.

Based on this, there are four plans, the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Point of Service Plan (POS), Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) and High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP). There are different pros and cons to selecting different plans; for example if you opt for HMO you will not be having much freedom to choose your own health care providers, but on the other hand you would not be bothered with a lot of paperwork to do. Before you select a plan, make sure what the plan allows you to do or restricts you from.
