Stereotypes About Blondes: Why Are Blondes Considered Dumb?
Sometime long ago, I read somewhere that when a woman needs change in her life, she’ll start with her hair first. Having recently become a blonde myself, I found this to be very true indeed. Not only has dying my hair into brighter tones improved my self-confidence, but it’s also helped reshape the way I see the world. For one, when I hear someone at work talking about “dumb blondes”, I immediately get defensive because hey, now it’s affecting me as well!
I really can’t force myself into understanding how one’s hair color should be the measure of their intelligence level, but blonde jokes really put their best effort into emphasizing this stereotype. As sexy as some people may find our blonde hair, we’re still generally perceived as gullible, less smart than everybody’s favorite brunettes and what not. And these are just a few of the characteristics I’ve heard to be associated with us; there are many hilarious things people like to think of “platinum beauties.”
Blondes think the world revolves around them
Well, if you’ve watched “Clueless” like twelve times, then yes. Just like any other woman or girl, we blondes also like to be the center of attention once in a while, but that doesn’t necessarily make us narcissistic, ego-centric fools. Even Cher knew when to help somebody in need and make sacrifices.
Blondes can get away with anything
Ask any woman you want and they’ll tell you they’ll try to avoid a parking ticket with the help of their looks and flirting capabilities with the policeman. However, people still think only blondes do this on a regular basis. It’s like any problem we have, we can solve it by just standing there and looking pretty.
Blondes are bad drivers
Generally, all women are perceived as bad drivers, but when it comes to blondes, they have to be terrible. Just because there’s a shift stick involved, it doesn’t mean we’ll bang the car in the first ditch. Everyone needs time and practice to become a good driver and being light-haired doesn’t have to imply we’ll suck at it.
Blondes are promiscuous women
Not everybody leads the life of Samantha Jones from “Sex and the City”, and not every brunette with an innocent face turns out to be a saint. Sorry ladies. Media has inflicted a general opinion on us all that blondes are hot and always ready for “action”, but it doesn’t mean that we have to accept it as our own.
Blondes have more fun
Do we like a good dancing club? Yes. But we also like a relaxed weekend on our sofa, watching Netflix comfortably in our PJs, just like anybody else. It’s not like we’re always ready for a wild party, and it certainly isn’t true that no one else knows how to have a good time. We like to focus on our work and ambitions and taking care of our family, too.
Blondes are obsessed with shopping
Even though Reese Witherspoon had a different outfit for every day and never wore it again in “Legally Blonde”, we’re not all coming from rich families and definitely not the main role of a girly movie. Just like any woman, we like to visit the mall every now and then, but it doesn’t mean that we’re irresponsible when it comes to finances.
Blondes are always the most popular girl in the crowd
In romantic teenage comedies, that’s almost always the case. The blonde is the most desirable girl to take to prom night, while her brunette and red haired friends don’t share the same luck. Luckily, that’s not how it happens in real life and being popular is not directly in relation to your hair color.
People somehow tend to forget that men can also be natural (and faux) blonds, and that everything mentioned also relates to them. However, thanks to being male, they’re often saved from the common teasing and making fun of. If we think closely, all these stereotypes are based on hair color and not gender, yet, here we are.
