SCHITT’S CREEK: A WORTHY WINNER AT THE 72ND PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS
The creators Eugene and Daniel Levy must have been content with
the finale “Happy Ending” of their smasher blockbuster “Schitt’s Creek”, but
that was not it. The closure happened on the podium of 72nd Primetime Emmy
Awards which bid farewell to the fan-favorite show by awarding it with a trophy
in every major category in the comedy or drama genre.
One
of the slightly unnoticed winners has been the costume designers Debra Hanson
and her assistant Darci Cheyne who came out victorious in Best Contemporary
Costumes Category, for their work in the “Happy Ending” episode. The highlights
of the episodes which began to trend on the internet in August were the
costumes of David (skirt suit), Alexis (glittering gown), Moira (a queen-like
garb), and Johnny Rose (his trademark suit along with a bow-tie).
Schitt’s
Creek was nominated in fifteen categories at 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards among
which it swept in nine. It became the first show ever in the 72 years of Emmys
to win all the four major acting awards in the comedy or drama genre. Its tally
of nine awards is also now the highest ever which it attained after beating the
legacy of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.”
Eugene
and Daniel Levy created CBC television show Schitt’s Creek ran for six seasons
(2015-2020) and told the story of the Rose family who lose all their possession
to the government because of a fraud committed by their manager. Their only
salvation is a strange and shabby town called Schitt’s Creek which Johnny Rose
had bought as a joke for his son David. To avoid homelessness, the family moves
to Schitt’s Creek and starts living in a motel with optimism that one day they
will be back on their feet. However, the drama unfolds when hopelessness clouds
all of their lives as they struggle to find a way out and scuffle to live in a
town they massively hate.
The
family consisted of a businessman Johnny Rose (played by creator Eugene Levy),
his wife and soap opera actress Moira Rose (played by Catherine O’Hara), and
two children David and Alexis Rose (played by creator Daniel Levy and actress
Annie Murphy).
The
Rose family ensemble is supported by Roland, Jocelyn and Mutt Schitt (played by
Chris Elliott, Jenn Robertson, and Tim Rozon respectively). Other main
characters of the show include Daniel Levy’s sister Sarah Levy as Twyla Sands,
Dustin Milligan as Ted Mullens, and Emily Hampshire as Stevie Budd.
The
show’s concept came from Daniel Levy, who came up with it while watching a
reality tv show. He told in one of the interviews that he was watching a
reality tv show when the idea first originated in his mind. He illustrated in
the interview that the origins of the idea stemmed from a hypothetical scenario
in which he had envisioned a wealthy family like the Kardashians losing
everything.
“Would
they stay the same?” He asked the question to himself as well as to his father.
Daniel had asked his father to help transform the concept into a proper tv
series. “Schitt’s Creek” was the name given by Daniel’s father Eugene Levy.
Daniel
had a plan to end the series after the fifth season but due contract
commitments, he agreed to make one more season. The location of “Schitt’s
Creek” remained anonymous in the context of the story up until 2018 when Daniel
revealed that the town exists in Canada.
The
show was distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment and was produced by
Colin Brunton and Kosta Orfanidis. Eugene, Daniel and Fred Levy were the
executive producers alongside Andrew Barnsley, Ben Feigin, Kevin White, and
David West Read.
All
the six seasons of the sitcom are now available to stream on Netflix.
