Research grants on education are offered to promote student achievement and prepare them for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. Created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) sets aside a $68 billion budget to establish policies on federal financial aid for education, and distribution as well as monitoring those funds. Academic Improvement and Teacher Quality (AITQ) provides research grants on education to state and local educational agencies, institutions of higher education, and community and faith-based organizations. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) provides research grants on education to faculty at institutions of higher education, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral scholars. The program aims to advance fundamental knowledge of relevance to STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) education policy, promote equity in STEM, and build research capacity in education and learning.

Grants for STEM policy and practice

Research grants on education by AERA are open to field-initiated research, and benefit from innovative quantitative methods. The grants program encourages proposals across the lifespan and contexts of education and learning of relevance to STEM policy and practice. The research grants on education are available for faculty at institutions of higher education, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral-level scholars. Proposals are encouraged from the full range of education research fields and other disciplines engaged in education-related research. AERA provides research grants on education of up to $25,000 for one-year projects, and up to $35,000 for two-year projects. Institutions may not charge indirect costs or overhead on these grants.

The Office of Educational Research provides a list of funding opportunities.
