Optical Transmission System-DWDM
Dense Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (DWDM) is a Wave division multiplexing (WDM) technology that
extends the transmission capacity of existing optical fiber networks. It
multiplexes multiple optical carrier signals into a single fiber for
transmission, which can save a lot of fiber resources in long-distance
transmission applications. There are two main types of DWDM systems:
passive DWDM system and active DWDM system.
Passive DWDM system
Passive DWDM system does not use active devices such as fiber
amplifiers and dispersion compensators, and the transmission distance of this
system is limited by the transmission power of the optical module. However, it
has the advantage of high channel capacity, and is mainly used in metropolitan
area networks and high-speed transmission lines with high channel capacity.
Active DWDM system
Active DWDM is a system that includes a transpiler, whose role
is to perform an optoelectronic-optical (OEO) conversion.
Active DWDM systems are also more complex to manage and maintain, so their
operating costs are higher. Nonetheless, active DWDM systems are still
widely popular for high-capacity optical transmission applications.
