The Mazda Mazda 2 (Demio), a subcompact car, was introduced in 2002 as a predecessor to the first generation and is currently in its third generation. The Mazda 2 has evolved since 2002, initially sold as the Mazda Demio in Japan and other markets until 2019, and its latest model was released in 2022. Now, let us briefly examine how it has evolved since 2002.

First Generation (2002 – 2006)

The Mazda 2 (Demio) was introduced in 2002 as the second generation of the Mazda Demio, based on the DY platform developed with Ford, aiming to improve on-road performance, reduce production costs, and replace the Demio name in most markets. The Mazda 2 combines a small car and compact SUV, resulting in a hatchback body with high ground clearance, a redesigned front fascia, a watered-down beltline, and a flat rear end.

The Mazda 2 boasts a spacious interior with a high roof design, five high-mounted seats, and a rear bench suitable for two adults, despite limited shoulder room. Mazda 2 offers petrol and diesel engines, with a 1.3-liter inline-4 petrol engine as standard in Japan and a 1.5-liter option, and a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

Second Generation (2007 – 2013)

The second-generation Mazda 2 was unveiled in 2007 at the Geneva Auto Show, built on a lightweight Mazda/Ford platform. It features a conventional hatchback, boomerang-shaped taillights, and sharp creases on the sides. The second-generation Mazda 2 has a basic interior with 5 seats, extra storage compartments, and cloth upholstery.

The Mazda 2 has a 250-liter boot and can be extended to 787 liters by folding the rear seats. The model offers various engine options, including 1.3-liter, Skyactiv-G P3-VPS, 1.5-liter, ZY-VE, 1.4-liter, and 1.6-liter inline-4 petrol, diesel, and 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, or CVT transmissions.

Third Generation (2014 – 2021)

In 2014, Mazda introduced the third generation of the Mazda 2, featuring a shortened platform and a "Kodo" design language. Available as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback, it features a shield-like pentagonal grille and a big opening bumper. The Mazda 2 car is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate four adults and has standard and optional features like air conditioning, power mirrors, windows, locks, a 4-speaker CD stereo, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering wheel, and a satellite navigation system.

The Mazda 2 Skyactive models come with petrol or diesel engines, including F-P5, S5-DPTS, P3-VPS, and P3-VPS, and are paired with a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or 6-speed automatic transmission.

2022 – Present

Mazda has unveiled the 2022 Mazda2 hybrid, based on the Toyota Yaris, in four trims: base SE-L, upper Sport, GT Sport, and GT Sport Tech., each with unique features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, head-up display, leather seats, and adaptive LED headlights. The interior is well-assembled and robust, with high-spec touches. The spacious cabin comfortably accommodates passengers, and the five-door-only body style offers convenience. The Mazda 2 has a 280-liter boot.

Mazda has introduced the e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid powertrains in the 2022 model year to enhance efficiency. The release offers 1.5-liter engines with varying outputs, six-speed automatic or manual transmissions, and a mild-hybrid system for manual transmissions to reduce engine strain.
