Management of Moersch-Woltman Syndrome in Ayurveda
Introduction
Oho!! The toys are spread all over the floor. Let me go and pick them up, and our brain directs us to bend down and pick up the things but have you ever imagined doing these normal things with difficulty? Picking up a thing from the floor and doing household chores without any restrictions in the movement of limbs is a basic human response and activity. But when a condition where you find it difficult to just move, is where the problems arise and One such ailment that makes your body rigid and doesn't allow any movement is a stiff-person syndrome.
LET'S KNOW WHAT IS STIFF PERSON SYNDROME?
The word stiff gives us an idea of how this condition could influence the physique. This is a rare condition and neurological condition that is caused in one in a million. It results in progressive painful stiffening of the muscles, which restricts the movements of the body. This condition is also known as Moersch-Woltman syndrome and formerly stiff man syndrome.
As per Ayurveda, neurological disorders are caused due to imbalanced vata dosha. Even the influence of vitiated pitta and kapha can worsen the condition. Vata is the dosha that controls the movement as well as the functions of the body. When vata gets affected it causes stiffness and pain in the body.
LET'S KNOW THE CAUSES OF THIS CONDITION
The cause of this condition is still confusing for many but certain research has shown that it is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are caused when the cells of the body mistake their cells as foreign and start destroying them. This condition is predominantly seen in females as hormonal variations occur and are different in females as compared to males. This condition causes spasm and it may get triggered by some noise, sometimes emotional distress and or may be light physical touch.
SYMPTOMS OF STIFF PERSON SYNDROME
A person who is afflicted with this condition may experience stiffness of different parts of the body. The first muscles that get affected are the muscles of the abdomen and trunk. It can be painful and makes movement difficult. The limbs become rigid and its movements get restricted and even the stature of the person is distorted. The person may experience deformity in the sensory organs such as sensitivity to scorching light and noise. This condition can cause other autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, problems related to thyroid, pernicious anemia and vitiligo.
