Ayurveda for Ascites (Jalodar) - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

ABSTRACT

The most common disease of the liver is ascites. Ascites is a peritoneal fluid-related disease caused by increased blood pressure in certain arteries in the liver. Allopathy has no cure for it today, but Ayurveda has the best results for treatment of ayurveda. In Allopathic treatment, the fluid reoccur in the abdomen. The correlation of ascites is Jalodara. In this article, we are discussing the causes, symptoms, types and Ayurvedic treatment according to Planet Ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION

The excessive accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity is known as ascites. The transition from compensated cirrhosis to decompensated cirrhosis denotes the development of ascites. The free intraperitoneal fluid is very little in healthy individuals but in some women, there is 20 ml of fluid present during the menstrual cycle.

TYPES OF ASCITES

On the basis of, the amount of protein present in the fluid it is divided into 2 types:

1. TRANSUDATE ASCITES
2. EXUDATE ASCITES
   
   

1. TRANSUDATE ASCITES

When the leakage of fluid increases and leads to raised intravascular pressure then the level of SAAG (Serum ascitic albumin gradient) is equal to or greater than 25g/l, it is called Transudate ascites.

2. EXUDATE ASCITES

When the level of SAAG (Serum ascites albumin gradient) is less than 25g/l, it is called Exudate ascites.

CAUSES OF ASCITES

1. Alcohol overuse
2. Cirrhosis
3. Congestive heart failure
4. Pancreatitis
5. Fatty liver disease
6. Portal vein thrombosis

SYMPTOMS OF ASCITES

1. Abdominal pain
2. Bloating
3. Weight gain
4. Sense of fullness
5. Vomiting
6. Nausea
7. Shortness of breath

DIAGNOSIS

1. A fluid sample from the abdomen for infection.
2. Imaging - Ultrasound, MRI or a CT- scan for inside images of the abdomen.

TREATMENT

1. Diuretics
2. Anti-inflammatory drugs

COMPLICATIONS OF ASCITES

1. Abdominal wall hernias
2. Bloody ascites
3. Pleural effusion
4. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF ASCITES(JALODAR)

In Ayurveda ascites are correlated with jalodar which is referred to under Udara rogas. The prime causative factor which manifests the udara Rogas is vata.

DEFINITION

रूद्ध्व स्वेद अम्बु वाहिनी दोषा: स्रोतांसि संचिता।

प्राण अग्नि अपानान संदूषय जनयन्ति उदरं नृणाम।।    (च. चि. १३ ) 

Accumulation of aggravated vata in between skin and muscle tissue in udara leading to swelling in udara pradesh, it is termed as jalodara.

SAMPRAPTI OF JALODARA (ASCITES)

ACCORDING TO ACHARYA CHARAK

                 स्नेहपीतस्य मन्दाग्नेः क्षीणस्यातिकृशस्य वा।

                 अत्यम्बुपानांन्नुष्ठेअग्नौ  मारुत: क्लोमिन संस्थित:।।

                 स्रोत:सु रुद्धमार्गेषु कफश्चोदकमुर्षित:।

                 वर्धेयतां तदेवाम्बु  स्वस्थानादुदराय तौ ।।

The person whose agni (digestive fire) is manda (low) after snehapana (oleation therapy) or the person with a weak and skinny body, when they intake excessive water their agni (digestive fire) gets destroyed and air filled in kloma nalika (vessel related to the pancreas). The way of sources gets blocked and fluid increases in the abdomen and causes ascites.

1. PUNARNAVA CAPSULES

 These are herbal capsules formulated by Planet Ayurveda by using the extract punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa). It helps in balancing kapha and vata dosha. Punarnava is an anti-inflammatory herb. It helps to reduce enlargement of the abdomen.
Dosage- After meals, 2 capsules twice daily with warm water.

2. WATER EX-TABLETS

 These are herbal tablets formulated by Planet Ayurveda by using punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) root extract, Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) bark extract, Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) fruit extract and excipients. This extract of varuna helps to reduce deep-seated suppurative inflammation. This extract of gokshura acts as a diuretic.

Dosage- 2 tablets thrice daily with warm water after meals.

3. RENCURE FORMULA

These are herbal capsules formulated by Planet ayurveda by using punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) roots, varuna (Crataeva nurvala) bark, gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) whole, palash (Butea monosperma) bark and kasni (Cichorium intybus) root. In this, the palaash bark acts as an anti-inflammatory drug and also acts as a diuretic.

Dosage- 1 capsule twice daily with warm water after meals.

4. LIVER DETOX CAPSULES

These are herbal capsules formulated by Planet ayurveda by using katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa), punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), makoy (Solanum nigrum), biranjasipha (Achillea millefolium-Yarrow), jhavuka (Tamarix Gallica), himsra (Tamarix Gallica), haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and kasni (Cichorium intybus). It helps in detoxification of the liver and possesses hepatoprotective properties.

Dosage - 2 capsules twice daily with warm water after meals.

5. JALODARARI RASA

These herbal tablets are formulated by using Pippali (Piper longum), maricha (Piper nigrum), tamra bhasma (copper ash), rajani (Curcuma longa), jaipala (Croton tiglium) and snuhi ksheera (Euphorbia neriifolia). Jalodarari rasa is act as a virechan dravya so it is helps move out the fluid.

Dosage - After meals, 1 tablet twice daily with warm water

The accumulation of fluid in the abdomen is known as ascites. It occurs commonly in 50% of patients and ascites is a complication of cirrhosis.
