Are you a fruit or vegetables seller? Here are some important things for you regarding fruit vegetables packaging. Ensure you follow them when selling fruit and vegetables in Australia.

A lot of fruit and vegetables are sold on the basis of weight. When selling them, make sure to measure those edible items before your customers. The customers should get the opportunity to notice the measuring procedure including the readings on the measuring equipments, which must be approved by the NMI, verified as accurate by servicing licensee before they’re used and be installed properly for intended use.

If you are environment friendly, you would prefer using recycled boxes or cartoons for packing the fruit and vegetables. This is a very good thing to do but you need to ensure that the old labels that were previously attached to these cartoons or boxes are removed. After removing these labels, put the correct ones.  Have the name and address of the packer in the label and also attach the quantity.

Many fruit and vegetables are packed in advance in trays, bags or other kinds of packaging. If you are selling pieces of a whole vegetable or fruit by count in any transparent package, it is not necessary for you to put the number on package

But other kinds of pre-packed vegetable and fruits are to be marked and labeled with proper measurement. The measurement is done either in net weight or in numbers. The weight that’s marked or labeled should never include the weight of the packaging or wrapping materials.

If the fruit and vegetables are packed in random weights, you should mark and label in each pack with price/kg as well as the total price. But the food items may lose their weight over time. The packer should thus make an allowance for any expected losses in the measurement when packaging the product.

Make sure to use the right size of numbers as well as letters during packaging. The letters or numbers that are to be used for packaging depends upon the packaging size. For instance, if the dimension of the package is 120mm or less, the minimum height of the letters or numbers should be 2.0m. If it is over 360mm then the minimum height of the letters or numbers should be 4.8mm.

When pre-packaging the vegetable and fruits in bags or trays, you should never make the mistake of using the wrong abbreviations. For kilogram it is kg and for gram, it is g. The statement of measurement should be clear to read, in same direction as product or brand name, in different colour from background and in the metric units.

Products that are packed at the premises other than the place they should be sold, the full name and address of the packer or the person for whom it’s packed must be displayed.
