Earlier, people used to wipe their babies with scrap clothes and after usage, they used to wash and re-use them. According to doctors and medical experts, this practice can be unsafe for babies and can cause a variety of skin problems. Instead of using old clothes, doctors recommend using wet wipes to clean infants and toddlers who have very soft and sensitive skin. Since their invention in the 1950s, these wet wipes were used as baby wipes. But the wipes that were specially made for babies came in the 1980s.

Things to be considered before purchasing baby wipes:

  • Ingredients

It is important to make sure whether the wipe contains chemicals or not as chemicals in wet wipes can cause rashes on the soft and delicate skin of babies. So, for the baby, only those wipes should be chosen that consist of natural ingredients like water, glycerol, lemon oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, aloe-vera extract, and chamomile extract.

  • Scent

Many doctors suggest that babies should not be cleaned with wipes that are scented or have some kind of fragrance. This is because there is a high chance that scented wet wipes might have chemicals in them which is not good for the babies' skin.

  • Thickness

Thin wipes are porous making them ineffective in cleaning babies and when they are used, they might get torn off. That is why thick wet wipes are ideal to be used for babies.

  • Packaging

Just like ingredients, thickness, and scent, it is equally important to check the packets in which the wet wipes are offered. A large number of wet wipes are offered in simple plastic packs that are not able to retain the moisture of the wet wipes and become ineffective within few days of opening the seal. The effectiveness of a wet wipe depends on the level of moisture in it. Only those wet wipes that are packed in sturdy flip-up packets and boxes should be preferred and purchased.
