Do's and Don’ts of Safely Starting your Car after Lockdown
The lockdown that started on 21st March is still going on in some cities across the country. It’s been almost four months that people are living with restrictions. We’re all adapting to a new normal. After the first two strict lockdowns, the government of India divided the country into three zones – red, orange, and green. The red zone continues to have strict protocols, whereas the orange and green zones can enjoy some relaxation.
Many people haven’t used their cars for months now. And with monsoon approaching, it’s important to take care of the car, especially if it has been unused for a long time. Some may have used their car for essential commute, but must have not gotten a chance to service the car since the lockdown. In such a scenario, what are the dos and don’ts to take care of your car? Let’s find out:
1.Engine oil:
The engine is the most crucial part of the car. Before you start your car or go for a long journey, you must check the level of engine oil in the car. You may have to use a dipstick for checking. If it is less, then you can either visit the authorized service center or the nearest garage. But make sure you follow the prescribed guidelines.
2.Fluids:
Some fluids are extremely important for the smooth functioning of the car. These fluids include brake, clutch, and other oils/fluids. If your car has been unused, the fluid level may have gone down. However, not completely reached the lowest benchmark. Unless there’s a leak in the system. If there’s a leak then, you must fix it immediately as the fluid levels may keep dipping even further. To find out about the leak, just check below the car, if you see drops of oil then you can be certain that it’s a leak. If you have comprehensive car insurance, you can get it repaired through your car insurance claim. If you don’t, then you will have borne these expenses out of your pocket.
3.Batteries:
Try starting the car a few times, however, it if cranks each time, stop. You shouldn’t over try as it could cause more damage to the engine. If the car doesn’t start, there are chances that the battery of the car may have drained out. You can try to jump-start the car (start the car at second gear with external push). However, if this also doesn’t work, then you can call your car insurance company. You may require help. If you have comprehensive car insurance, batteries can be recharged simply by raising a claim.
4.Tyre:
If there isn’t adequate air in your tyres, then you may not be able to drive your car. If your car tyre is deflated or underinflated, then call for assistance through your car insurance company. They will coordinate with the car company and send help instantly. Do not drive your car unless you have checked the health of the tyres as it can cause permanent damage and result in a costlier repairing solution or tyre replacement.
If you have any problem starting your car and you can’t solve it, feel free to reach out to your car insurance company.
