Cleaning and Care of Handmade Durries
Caring about handmade carpets and dhurries can be a tedious process. Clients mostly ask me all the
time how they have to take care of their beautiful handmade durries. Truth be told it’s very simple, so once you know a couple
of pointers for keeping your handmade durries crisp and clean, you are all good
to go. Rugs and Beyond has compiled a few hacks and tricks to clean and
maintain these low pile durries.
1) Clean with Detergent and Water:- A handmade durry has to be washed with
icy water first and then left to dry in the shade.
The
procedure is as follows. First, wet the durry,
foam with soap and a soft sweeper and clean completely on both sides with the water. Apply the detergent water in direction
of the pile. Make sure all detergent is out of the durry before continuing to dry.
Keep the water running over the handmade durry
until it runs clear. Make sure that both sides
of the durry are completely dry before putting it on the floor.
2) Vacuum your floor coverings:- I suggest an ideal approach to do this, which is to first vacuum your durry and after that set closest to surface. You
should be vacuuming your durry regularly
twice a month at least.
Durry rugs are normally
better cleaned when laid on the floor for quite a while after which the same
can be vacuumed. For high traffic areas you have to vacuum once a week and area’s
for less traffic, it is suggested to vacuum once every month. You have to vacuum both sides
of durries to ensure its longevity.
3) Remove stain with baking
soda:- If any
particular area is damp and dirty then let the baking soda fix on the spot for at
least 20 minutes and then vacuum the
area. Baking soda is one of the best methods
for removing the stain from handmade
durries and is highly effective.
4) Clean the area with cold water and
a Clean towel:- You can
also remove spots by using a towel to
remove as much moisture from the stain and you can simply do so by scrubbing on
the spots. Put the dry towel on top of the area and, use your hands, press your
full weight on various regions of the towel to assimilate as much dampness as
you can from the spot. Repeat this movement on various parts of the towel until
the spot is for the most part cleaned. Scrubbing will only deepen the stain so it’s
important to clean the stain out by a towel.
If you want
then you can give it to a professional dry cleaner
to clean a durry in a professional way.
Important Tips to keep in mind:
1 1- We must never use dry powder cleaners, antacid cleaners, Oxy cleaners, hydrogen peroxide, and blanch to remove stains.
2- You should rotate your rug within
every six months to a year.
3- You have to protect from sunlight.
Use shadows and air for drying durries.
4- Never use washing machine for cleaning handmade dhurries otherwise all threads will unravel.
