Can a Small Business Idea give you Overwhelming Success?
My name is Scarlett
Butler, and this is my story.
I am 29, and until a year
ago, I was just a housewife.
It’s not like I did not
have dreams, or I did not want to see them come to fruition, or I lacked the
will to make them fruitful.
I had all of these, yet I
didn’t.
To understand my story,
you have to follow my personality trait. So, let’s delve right into my tale.
The Introvert Seeking Independence
I have a very muted
personality. I have been the outspoken and free-spirited human. I did what my
parents told me and never question them.
It is hard to believe
that someone like me exists in the present, but they do, especially in the
upper-class British daughters. We have to ensure that our family’s status does
not get tarnished by our actions.
When I wanted to pursue culinary school, my
parents made me study literature.
When I
wanted to establish my own business, I was asked to learn to take care of our
estate.
When I
wanted to make my career, I was asked to marry a man I had only met at a couple
of events.
So yes, I was married at
26, because that was the ideal age to get married. Nobody asked me what I
wanted. Not that I could tell them because all my life, I had never once gone
against what my parents wanted.
I was staying at home,
going to or organising parties, and looking after my husband's needs was the
entirety of my life.
But I wanted more, so
much more.
I craved independence.
I craved success.
And I craved to have a backbone.
So I developed one, I
told my husband that I would start baking and I might make it a business that
would want to run fulltime. And to my utter surprise, my husband did not deny
me.
The Introvert Working For It
So I started baking. I
baked everything, from bread to croissants to English muffins and even cakes. My
signature dish was the blueberry tart; the soft filling and the crumbly base
would melt into your mouth once you tried it.
I knew my high profile
friends would not like the idea of buying my baked goodies. So, I did not even
tell.
I started venturing out
to small bakeries in London to give them a few samples of my dishes and see if
they were interested in working with me, and two of them were.
So I started there.
I used to wake up at 3:30
every day to make my batch of desserts from scratch without anyone’s help.
I did not even take a
penny from my husband; however, I did make use of his full pantry. But that was
because I did not have any other option.
The first few months, I
worked like a maniac.
I baked
batches upon batches of desserts that I personally delivered to five different
bakeries all over London.
I
looked up new dished every day and tried baking them to see if they would work.
I also
started scouting catering businesses that might need a baker.
Eventually, I found my
chance.
The Introvert’s Success
About half a year of
sleep deprivation and constant running around, I got a call from one of the
bakeries asking if I would like to do a bulk order for an event their client
was organising.
Their client specifically
asked for my blueberry tarts to be on the menu. I told you they were my
specialty.
Their order was for about
250 guests the week after that, and apart from the advance, the entire payment
would be given once the event was over.
I was over the moon after
hearing the news. My husband said that he felt like I was walking on the
clouds, but I was; I was so euphoric.
I knew I would need help
to make an order like that. I asked our maid, her daughter, and our chauffeur's
wife, to help me out. And they so generously agreed.
I would need financial
help as well because the ingredients were quite costly. Asking from my business
would defy the purpose of being independent. So, I decided to apply for doorstep
loans like Provident, and the financer actually came to my home to
personally give me the amount.
So, we took on the
kitchen and made the five desserts and two savoury starters two hours before
the event.
Can you guess the
reaction of the guests? Of course, they loved each of my dishes.
The Introvert’s Future
The event was the turning
point of my life. I started getting more orders due to that event and the
spread of the word about my baking.
I wanted to establish a
quaint bakery, but now I am almost finished with the legal formalities of
opening an office for my catering business.
My dream of being
independent has finally come to fruition. And I love every moment of the same.
It has been over a year since I asked my husband for money. Instead, I shower
him with gifts I buy on my own.
Every time I give him something,
I see the joy and pride in his eyes enough to make me push myself even more.
Description
There are so many women
in our world who give up their dreams for their families. I was one of them
too, but I changed my destiny with a business idea I thought was
inconsequential, yet it became my ticket to freedom.
