Woof, woof! The unusual ‘dog in tights’ trend has ‘barked’ it’s way onto the list of unusual tights trends. Before this absurd cry for attention, there was Liu Xianping, the 72 year old Chinese grandfather.

The elderly gentleman was photographed in a selection of hosiery ‘as a joke’ for his granddaughter’s latest online retail venture, Yuekou.

The emerging trend, coming mainly from the East, took the web by storm. It seems to involve a random list of unexpected fashion followers. Whether they intended to or not, the latest crop of unusual fashionistas has caused a virtual stir.

It makes us wonder whether there is more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps this is all part of a cleverly crafted PR strategy, from the East. The Chinese grandfather claims the clothes were worn ‘by chance’, so then why did the unconventional images have to be sploshed over the internet, instead of being filed in a personal family album, as most would?

The same goes for the strange headlining dog-in-tights trend, which satirizes the animal referred to as ‘man’s best friend’. Is it a bit of light-hearted eccentricity an overwhelming amount of focus to? Whatever the case, the dog-in-tights trend has definitely caused a sudden stir in cyberspace.

The trend seems to have an eerie undertone to it, as the dogs pose unknowingly, with set of tights and heels shoved onto their hind legs. Some may find the tights cute in certain images, like the one of the fluffy Pomeranian modelling a pair of opaque black tights underneath some trendy zebra-striped house-boots.

On the other hand, most images give off an unnatural creepiness, such as that of some masculine-looking Labradors sat bored and fed-up in some sheer black tights, mockingly topped off with a feminine pair of pointy black heels.

The tights may be used to keep the dogs warm or snug in the colder months – but think twice. Would the tights not rip off or even cause the dog’s fur to get tangled or knotty.

If they happen to be tight or produced in an agonizing material, they can be constrictive and hazardous for the unaware pet’s genital area, to say the least!

The cheap tights affectation was not born in the UK, but initiated in the East, through popular Chinese social network, Weibo. The Chinese social network stands as a serving substitute to popular global sites such as Facebook and Twitter that are banned in Mainland China.

This makes us wonder whether the highly talked about "gou gou chuan siwa" (dog-in-tights trend), can be revelled as a passing fancy or be the initial domino piece tipping of a chain of wild eccentricities. It will definitely cause less of a stir when the next young entrepreneur bases their next ventures marketing scheme upon dressing a set of wild, living creatures in a variety of costumes.

Do not be surprised if you see a crocodile or giraffe rocking a pair of ankle socks and boots next, topped off with a cowboy hat to add that special touch. Just a word of advice to the bidding investors – make sure your fingers do not get chomped off, if you plan on catching a piece of roaring action in this viral mayhem!
