Australia’s three most popular skilled immigration pathways, known as the General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, aim to attract the best and brightest workers engaged in various occupations from across the world to fulfill local labor market requirements. The selection process for these visas allows authorities to meet this aim, since only candidates who score a minimum of 65 points based on the selection factors of the Australia point system can submit an Expression of Interest for these visas.

The GSM visas are points-tested i.e. eligibility of candidates is determined by a ranking system, wherein points are allocated to each candidate based on relevant eligibility criteria. Each visa category has a different set of requirements and parameters. Eventually, those who pass the point test by scoring 65 or more points can enter the EOI pool.

However, in order to submit an application for the desired visa, candidates must obtain an invitation to apply from the DHA. Invitations are only issued to those who satisfy a certain point threshold, also known as the ‘point cut-off’. Thus, it is important to note the selection factors of the point system, to identify a suitable visa category, and explore ways to maximize the point score.

On a monthly basis, the Department of Home Affairs – Australia’s federal immigration authority – conducts rounds of invitations. Only the highest-ranking candidates based on the Australia point system evaluation factors, who meet the point cut-off – which changes with each round and is different for each visa category – receive invitations to apply for the visa. Invited candidates can submit a complete visa application – including supporting documents and visa fees – to the DHA.
