As one of the latest development acronyms, CSS, or the cascading style sheets, has played a crucial role in defining website’s appearance and usability in a dynamic context of web design and layout.

In the context of several years of its functioning, CSS has developed from a rather simple language into an inseparable component of contemporary web design.

Therefore, the aim of this article is to provide an understanding of CSS, its versions, its relation with HTML, and a detailed timeline of all the versions of CSS.


THE BASICS OF CSS

CSS was developed in early 1990s to help meet the increasing demands for the layout. at this time, however, the internet was just coming into use and designers were limited as to what they could do in terms of managing the graphical aspects of websites.

At the time, any web content in particular was a text and HTML – HyperText Markup Language was the only way to structure the web files.

As there are more and more visually appealing websites, more requests for this language, which is mainly used for styling, appeared. This led to the creation of CSS which is supposed to provide cascading style sheets for documents.


Creation of CSS.

In 1994, prominent originator of web building from Norway Hakon Wium Lie united with the Dutch programmer Bert Bos, and offered the first CSS specification.


They aimed at getting rid of the presentation (CSS) from the content (HTML) in order to improve efficiency of the web development and its flexibility. HTML is extra involved with defining the form of the content material that goes into a website while CSS is answerable for the seems and look of this content material.
