@Mike Farris - your explanation is perfect. We all hate spam and as for FB, I really hate it when I share my FB with someone, who then contribute nothing of value, other than to post links. It forces me 'hide' them as soon as I see them. Imagine, your other friends may even think you're supporting the program, which you might not.
As for learning the tricks of the trade, there are hundreds, if not thousands of sites where you can learn everything about advertising and promotion. It's a Google
In order for you not to be considered spamming you only can advertise where it is allowed such as: freeadboards, viral marketing sites, list building sites etc. To outright post your link anywhere else is considered spam. As a newbie you have to learn how to promote properly.

Spamming takes many forms, it not just unwanted e mails now. Yes sending unwanted commercial (Advertising) e mails is a no no.
But spamming is also posting your links on the timelines of others. So posting your links any where on a site like Facebook other than on your own timeline or pages is spamming. Immediately sending links to someone that you have added as a contact is also spam.
Also in forum and blogs using comments to post your links is considered spam. Unfortunately with so many
Always use a SPAM notice with every email you send. It lets the person know why they are on your contact list, and allows them to opt out. Here's the one I use.
We are anti - SPAM. You were submitted to my mailing list because you 1) are a

thank you for this very nice information you've shared..yes, you're right..but I can only remember sharing my referral links on my fb acct from which this certain guy who told me I'm spamming him isn't on my list..and I won't if ever I knew about it, I would never ever spam anyone..
As a newbie you get sold to an opportunity and you get a referral link to promote. You are excited and start sending mails and post on other's fb wall. Most programs do not have a good training program from where you can learn how to promote. If you really want a good break through in online business, you should first learn promotion and advertising. SFI is a business where complete training is available.

Why would they say you were spamming? Were you sending out email to people you didn't know? That is considered spamming.
