We have dreams because they are needed to keep us mentally health. It is like the brain is watching films while we are sleeping because it has nothing else to do. Sleep deprivation leads soon to hallucinations and other problems! BUT dreams function is even to solve problems you had at the daytime. HavenĀ“t you ever waken upin the middle of the night and suddenly remembered something or had a solution to a problem?
@Bruce, maybe I was trying to say your subconcious mind is telling you you can do it and maybe that's why you dream about flying. Sorry if I got anything wrong

It happened to me more than once that I dreamed the solution of an internet related issue I am struggeling with. And lucky me, I remember those dreams when I wake up.
Josh I am not sure I would agree with that at all.... Its very common to dream about things you have never experienced. For example many people have dreams that they can fly... something they have never experienced outside of a dream, with children its common for them to dream of monsters.... which obviously one is never going to experience. So I am not sure where you learned that you can't dream about what you have not yet experienced. but I am fairly sure its not accurate.

The reason we remember nightmares better than dreams is they have a tendency to wake us and our conscious takes over from our subconscious and stores the dream as a memory.
This is also why the easiest to remember dreams are the ones where y

At times bad dreams don't mean anything, bad dreams can be attributed to some movie that we looked at that was unpleasant, worrying about something or eating to late. It is your subconscious reliving what you did during the day. If you have nightmares that could be from stress. Maybe there is a chemical in the brain that makes us dream. I do not know but taking psychology in school that is what we learned about where dreams/nightmares possibly come from.

Also, all dreams (good or bad) are a reflection of what is/has happened in your life, for eg you cannot dream about what you have not yet experienced
