The ONLY metric that indicates effective advertising is Return On Investment, so if your investment is only time it should be obvious that free advertising has a better chance of meeting that goal.

Based on my own belief, i have come to understand that content is KING, when your content is well written and address to TARGETED MARKET, in tends to bring in more sale and traffic to your business.
Most especially; make sure that what you have to offer to the public is of value, with this, you don't really need marketing or advertising that much; the sales could be carried on with-less-work-done.

From my experience, FREE ads are a lot less in visitor quantity but if the title is a good one, they draw more interest. Paid ads are a waste of money for the most part. You might get more visitors but hardly any buyers. Targeted or not, chances are they are just surfing either for cash/credits, or just clicking anything that shows up. I've had more signups from free ads than paid.
