Warren, I know....I just like to see them work things out amongst their selves or collectively call me an idiot...my goal is to get them to live on the site until they buy or share something good.
Now I do have a few sites where the message needs to stay on point which I totally agree with you that I can't afford for someone who doesn't have a clue leading people off a cliff.

Sharmila, its called "remove links from comments" its a free plugin. If you edit peoples links they probably show up as you wrote them yourself. I would try to keep Akismet and use this if it works.
Also try:
LionScripts: IP Blocker Lite - anybody who spams you just put their IP in and it will block them. I know people often use proxies but for the ones who don't or for those who reuse those proxies won't bother you any longer.

Mike I still encourage visitors to express themselves with a Contact page, so the serious ones I WANT to work with are not hindered at all.

Most of my WordPress sites now are Content Management sites where I removed the feature to make comments completely, no spam EVER.
