@Dan I wonder what the difference is. I have the Paid Avast.... I had mentioned earlier that I somehow got the 'Ransom Virus" and my computer was totally LOCKED I had this screen that said.. WARNING WARNING the FBI has seized your computer but If I sent 100 bucks they would unlock it. Though I may known as Silly Cindy.. even I didn't fall for that one.I had to take it to the computer guys to get it UNLOCKED
If I would of had the free version I would of thought that was my problem but... at tha
I used AVG (free) for many years without any complaints. When I got more requests from friends to save the from a virus, I learned that Avast! (free) beat even AVG hands down. Now, I only use Avast! (free) and recommend it to everyone I meet.
Thanks to all for your wonderful comments. I find it fascinating all of the different things people use to secure their computer.... I have less than a month to decide to renew my Avast or to change.... I think I am more confused now that I was before I asked the question..... Thanks to all for taking the time to comment. I am sure your remarks have been a help to others as well
I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It was recommended to me by a computer tech friend and it is free. He also recommended Advanced System Care to help keep my system running smoothly and to help speed up the performance. ASC has a free version and a paid version. I opted to upgrade to the paid Pro version as it has much more capability to optimize my system.
@Cindy.. yeah it drives me nuts. Changing some of the defaults in browsers such as firefox is a pain at the best of times. I find when you get stuck with the AVG search thing even when you have correctly typed the correct website address into the URL bar.
I use AVG Currently, I use to work as one of the Q/A Testers for McAfee (Network Associates) after they merged with Dr Solomons. I find the free ones are pretty much as good as the paid ones, I find the continual attempts to become default browser search engine and add toolbars pretty annoying though.
@Reuben now maybe you can understand why I use Linux a little more. It SPEEDS UP my computer and has NOTHING running in the background. Most Windows users have NO CLUE what kind of performance hit they take until they try some other operating system on the same computer.
I have used a lot of anti virus programs. Some drastically slowed down my computer and had to remove them and ask for my money back from the sellers. The one I am most satisfied with is NOD32. It slows down my computer but not as slow as others and I hardly noticed it.

I use Norton Security Suite which comes free with a subscription with Comcast. Works perfectly fine and, has advance features for the geeks like me.

@Cindy... It just goes to show how much we all value customer support. The product can be great but if you can't get help when you need it....
