no offense intended Neville, so sorry if I stepped on your toes...my point was really to keep answers clear for those followers or attracted readers to the thread.
If we reflect on some of the comments from various people and take a look at their profiles we can gain a better understanding and contribute accordingly.
Actually, Trev, I thought I kept it simple, with a little explanation. Yes, I use Word Press for blogging, I don't like the restrictions of using .com and I install via cpanel on my self hosted sites so do not directly use .org.
Thanks Neville that is interesting... and rather than get too technical here...lets keep it simple by comparing the differences for the benefits of many.
For blogs I use WordPress. That answers the first part of the question.
As for the second part I have always thought that the .com was for a free WP blog, that has some limitations as far as editing and the the ways it can be used.
The .org is where you can download the software for using on a self-hosted site. the .org is also where you can go to download themes and plugins as well as using their knowledge base. However, I never download from .org because my hosting provides quick and easy i
Thank Bruce you provide valuable information for those who can only market online with a very limited budget. I may even try it myself for building a new niche focused authority blog.

However in reference to the Wordpress.com site, you are right, very hard to monetize it. I prefer to self host the wordpress software on my own domain as it has worked the best overall.
Trev, look at the link I posted, I think they give you a LOT more than you expect. So yes you have 100% control over your blog (in fact full control panel hosting). 5 domains 5 subdomins 5 databases, no ads, no gimicks. They have something like a 70% upgrade rate from free to pro. I use them to hold all my wordpress blogs.
now let me share this with you all... wordpress ,com is free with its restrictions but they do offer your chance to buy the "wordpress .me" hosting service by whats known as "domain mapping" it's expensive and I would rather have my own domain and hosting and install wordpress from there... hence worpdress.org using C-Panel from my web hosting service.
@ Trev, sorry I was talking about how ICANN considers it. .com = for commercial use. .net is for networks. .org is for organizations. .gov is for government.

Haha got the 2 sites mixed up. Wordpress.org is not even hosting as far as I know, just a place to download the software for your own hosting. Its .com thats free :) None the less there are plenty of quality free wordpress hosts (for example byethost.com)
