It depends on quality of traffic. High bouncing ratio (revisits to the same page from the same sources by the same visitor / IP within a short timeframe) will even HARM your ranking, unfortunately!

Traffic depends on your network and source that where you are providing your services, Basically from social networks. Ranking depends on which place you are submitted your business, it should be high PR quality sites and most relevant to your business. and the last Page Rank depends on How many quality likes you have. Quality backlinks and those sites which follow google guidelines gives you good link, if you are submitted your business on that site.

Agree with @Jeremy Linder ...........Yes website traffic increase your ranking when traffic is coming to direct Google. It will give more impact and better search result. Social Media provides you traffic only.

I do get traffic from several social media channels - Am on basically 20+ of them where I do spread my promotion. What does affect PR ranking? Backlinks from other websites?

If your website gains traffic from google, then definitely your ranking will increase, but if you have a direct visitor through social media, ads or any other channel, it will not affect on ranking. Ranking and traffic, both are different things.

Sometimes, it has to be traffic from all over the world and not just one city. So its hard if you are a local company trying to grow your visits outside the city. But the right marketing company can help. I have a couple of sites and the ones with high traffic do rank a bit more but there are other things that can help your ranking better.
