I don't think it's a matter of trust as much as it is a display of their lack of general business sense. I am reluctant to go too far into a relationship with anyone who has such a high disregard of common practices over something so simple to comply with.
Philippe and Manoj are right. If you haven't got a business logo you should upload a photo because you are asking people to join your business. Would you like to join a business, or have you ever been interviewed by someone holding a cartoon character in front of their face?
I would not be happy seeing a celebrity picture for a personal photo or a cartoon character or a photo-shopped picture. Agree with @Philippe. If it is an organization - then a logo is great. If it is a person, then a real picture is a must - why come to a social network if you ain't social enough to show your face??? If a person has a valid reason (like ugliness or warts etc), then it would make sense to hide. I agree wholeheartedly with @Susie
If the person uses a real picture or a business logo, I believe it's easier to take the person more seriously.
After all, APSense is a business social network first and foremost, unlike Facebook which is a social network who decided to take advantage of the business side of things by letting people create Fan Pages and groups.
@Allan If I invest in any business I do take the communication level a few steps further to email to get a better understanding of the concept and usually by then can identify whether it is a sales gimmick or an honest proposal and an example of that is ClickorSignup which although I did not invest, but for the point of this topic regarding a photo, COS nagged me to request a withdrawal, I spoke to several of their admin and owners and some I have never seen a photo so for me personally judgemen
@TamaraV. That's a good point. But what about when you already deal with finances, like investing in a business which that person you communicate with is offering. How do you handle it?
I can't be judgemental on this question and one good example is Language Learning Academy - What a professional crowd of people they are, friendly and respectful and no real photo, so for that reason, I will not judge a book by its cover.
I prefer to see a human for the profile pic, although I have connected with people who use a business logo - I like having a face associated with the profile - It looks more professional and as we tend to be more visual - well it makes common sense!
The real thing is, how do the picture make you feel. And why? Or move on. It's a so what.
Some marketers are making a point. Just have fun, your own way. Who and what is Ruling You!
Generally speaking no I do not trust those who put no pic. But some post pics of people that are not them either. Guess it is a gamble. I only become suspicious when my computer warns me or something in my gut says, no stay away!

I beleive people likes to see a face behind a name and who they are speaking with. It also helps them to trust a person more seeing a real face.

Actions are more important than a photo, so not posting a photo is no reason to distrust.

I'm sure all users are very much familiar and good with photo uploading. Newbies in business are for sure great with that. Don't you think.

I always take a lot closer look at their profile. Sometimes they are just a newbie and are not good at putting pictures on their profile.

I think I'd prefer if they put a face to their name. Why would you want to hide your face if you have a transparent agenda?
